Al-Amin Ahamed, a doctor of pharmacy candidate at the 91�Թ�'s Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, has been named a 2024 McCall MacBain Scholar, joining the fourth cohort of recipients of the scholarship.

McCall MacBain Scholars are selected based on evidence of exceptional character, community engagement, leadership potential, entrepreneurial spirit, academic strength and intellectual curiosity. They are provided access to a fully funded master’s or professional degree at McGill University, mentorship and a comprehensive leadership program.

Ahamed will pursue a master of public policy in the hopes of advancing health equity in drug policy.

As an undergraduate student at 91�Թ�, Ahamed served as social innovation ambassador, orientation co-ordinator and residence don at Innis College. Upon returning to 91�Թ� for their second degree, they continued to gain leadership and governance experience, serving as vice-president, professional faculties of the 91�Թ� Students’ Union and president of the Undergraduate Pharmacy Society. They also served as president of the PharmaPride club, working to advance equity, diversity and inclusion in health care.

“Words alone cannot articulate what this scholarship means to me. Growing up in a first-generation immigrant household, I never felt that these types of opportunities were meant for people like me,” Ahamed said. “Becoming a McCall MacBain Scholar has transformed my life by making graduate education an accessible reality for me and my family.”

91�Թ� graduate Abigail Ralph has been named a McCall MacBain Scholar for 2023. She’ll head to McGill University in the fall to study neuroscience.

Ralph’s achievements in research and community leadership, plus her skills, potential and character, landed her the prestigious award, which founders John McCall MacBain and Dr. Marcy McCall MacBain modelled after the Rhodes Scholarship. In addition, nine further U of T graduates received runner-up awards (see below).

“It definitely wasn’t easy to be so interested in so many things,” says Ralph, who earned a bachelor’s of science degree from 91�Թ� Scarborough this year. “But I found that pursuing them all anyway is honestly great. In neuroscience, people are moulded to think a certain way, but when you have a lot of experiences and learn how to deal with many different personalities, you can really add a lot of nuance. I know now that the more interdisciplinary a person is, the easier it becomes to problem-solve.”

Two 91�Թ� alumnae have been named McCall MacBain Scholars for 2022.

Janelle Brown-Walkus, who graduated with a master of science degree from the Faculty of Dentistry in 2021, and Linda Bùi, who graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in 2018 from 91�Թ� Scarborough, will head to McGill University in the fall to study dentistry and public policy, respectively.

Their outstanding achievements, skills, potential and character landed them the prestigious awards, which founders John McCall MacBain and Dr. Marcy McCall MacBain modelled after the Rhodes Scholarship. Six other 91�Թ� graduates and students received runner-up awards.

Brown-Walkus says she is looking forward to studying for her doctor of dental medicine on her way to a career improving oral health care for Indigenous communities.

“91�Թ� developed my dream to become more than just a practising dentist, but to work in policy,” she says. “I was so thrilled to hear about winning the McCall MacBain Scholarship. It means a lot to me because I wanted so much more than just the curriculum and hands-on training. I wanted to have an environment where I can thrive and become a leader in dental public health.”

Two Faculty of Arts & Science graduands are among 20 student leaders chosen from across Canada for the inaugural McCall MacBain Scholarships.

Grace Ma and AJ Bimm were chosen from 735 applicants for the scholarships, which include tuition and fees at McGill University and a living stipend of $2,000 per month.

Scholars are selected for their character, community engagement, leadership potential, entrepreneurial spirit, academic strength and intellectual curiosity.

A member of Trinity College, Ma will graduate this year with a bachelor of science with a double major in environmental science and English literature. She is involved with Trinity’s literary arts journal, The Trinity Review, co-leads a university-wide environmental action group and volunteers to teach violin to youth. She plans to pursue a law degree at McGill.

Bimm is a member of New College who will graduate with an honours bachelor of arts with a double major in sociology and urban studies. Captain of the varsity track and field team, Bimm recently co-founded the BIPOC Varsity Association, a group for Black, Indigenous and people of colour student-athletes. At McGill, he will pursue a master’s degree in urban planning with a special focus on active transportation and access to housing.
