Two early-career researchers from the Faculty of Arts & Science are recipients of the Dorothy Shoichet Women Faculty in Science Award of Excellence: Ting Li, an assistant professor in the David A. Dunlap department of astronomy and astrophysics; and Corliss Sio, an assistant professor in the department of Earth sciences.

The award was established in 2016 by University Professor Molly Shoichet to help early-career female researchers focus on their research.

Li’s research goal is to better understand the formation of the Milky Way Galaxy and galaxies in the nearby universe.

“I am profoundly honoured to have been selected as the recipient of the Dorothy Shoichet Award, and I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to my department for nominating me,” says Li, “especially as I embark on establishing an optical instrumentation lab in my department and take on the role of chairing a large international collaboration.”

Sio’s research lies at the intersection of isotope geochemistry, experimental petrology and numerical modeling. She was instrumental in winning a major Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) grant for the GEMINAE lab (Geochemistry of Elements and Metal Isotopes in Nature and Experiments).

“I am incredibly honoured to receive this award and am grateful for Professor Shoichet’s generosity and my department’s support,” says Sio. “This award could not be better timed, coming while I am in the thick of building a laboratory that will be the first of its kind in Canada.”

For her pioneering work in the study of microplastics, Professor Chelsea Rochman of the department of ecology and evolutionary biology (EEB) has received a 2021 Dorothy Shoichet Women Faculty in Science Award of Excellence.

The award was established in 2016 by University Professor Molly Shoichet in honour of her late mother.

“Professor Rochman’s internationally recognized research into the environmental impacts of microplastics will yield unprecedented insight into their effect on ecosystem health and will play a major role in shaping international policy and legislation,” says Vince Tropepe, a professor in the department of cell and systems biology and the Faculty of Arts & Science’s vice dean, research.

“I am absolutely honoured to receive the award for a couple of reasons,” says Rochman. “First of all, I really admire Molly Schoichet’s work and career. Second, some extra time to focus on my research will allow me to give more of my focus to a large-scale experiment I am currently leading at the Experimental Lakes Area. This will be instrumental for a large collaborative project that will help narrow gaps in the knowledge about microplastics and inform local and global policies.”

Professor Stephen Wright, EEB chair, says Rochman is a trailblazing ecologist whose work has been groundbreaking in its characterization of the sources and ecological impacts of plastic pollution.

“Her work is not only revolutionizing our understanding of the effects of plastics and their interactions with other stressors on ecosystems, but her lab is also playing a major role in shaping international policy and legislation.”

For her pioneering work in organic polymer chemistry, Helen Tran has been recognized with a 2021 Dorothy Shoichet Women Faculty in Science Award of Excellence.

The award was established in 2016 by University Professor Molly Shoichet in honour of her late mother.

“Professor Tran’s creative use of polymer chemistry, machine learning and computer-assisted design is revolutionizing our understanding of how to generate multifunctional materials and is paving the way for the development of new health and sustainability technologies of the future,” says Vince Tropepe, a professor in the department of cell and systems biology and the Faculty of Arts & Science’s vice dean, research.

An assistant professor in the department of chemistry, Tran is cross-appointed to the department of chemical engineering and applied chemistry.

“I am incredibly honoured to receive this award, which will accelerate my research program during a critical point in my career,” says Tran. “I admire Professor Shoichet's altruistic initiative to create such a meaningful award to support younger faculty in the sciences.”

Robert Batey, chair of the department of chemistry, says Tran has “unparalleled enthusiasm and passion for science” and for training and teaching junior scientists.

“Her bold and highly creative research program, securely underpinned by her early success record and enabled by her interdisciplinary training, is unique and will surely propel her to make significant discoveries in the polymer science field,” Batey says. “Helen is perfectly positioned to use this prestigious award as a key career accelerator, and I am confident she will also serve as an ideal ambassador to honour Dorothy Shoichet and inspire the next generation of women faculty in science, particularly in chemistry.”

Sophie Rousseaux, an assistant professor of biological and organic chemistry in the Faculty of Arts & Science’s department of hemistry, has won the distinguished 2020 Dorothy Shoichet Women Faculty in Science Award of Excellence.

Rousseaux’s research focuses on the development of enabling and transformative synthetic methods to access biologically active small molecules more efficiently. She also aims to develop safer methods, such as the use of non-toxic reagents and the production of non-toxic waste.

“Professor Rousseaux’s outstanding research is having a major impact in her field,” Vince Tropepe, vice-dean, research, said. “She is pioneering new and exciting synthetic chemistry methodologies that could transform the way pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals or materials are made and used in various industries.”

The Dorothy Shoichet Women Faculty Science Award of Excellence was established in 2016 by University Professor Molly Shoichet in honour of her mother — who died in October 2020 — to help early-career female researchers focus on their research.

“Professor Rousseaux is perfectly positioned to fulfill the purpose of the Dorothy Shoichet Award of Excellent for Women in Science,” said Alexie Tcheuyap, vice-dean, faculty, academic life and equity. “As an early-career researcher in a key STEM field, we are confident that she is on the brink of moving from the opening years of a promising career into the brightly lit arena of international recognition. “
