Twenty faculty members from the 91�Թ� have been awarded Canada Research Chairs in support of their research in areas ranging from LGBTQ2S+ youth mental health to quantum photonic technologies and sustainable suburban housing.

Nine professors from across the 91�Թ� have been appointed as Fellows to the Royal Society of Canada – a recognition awarded to the country’s most distinguished scholars, artists and scientists.

“Driven by deep curiosity, creativity and a determination to embrace some of society’s biggest challenges, these extraordinary researchers are having a profound impact across a diverse range of disciplines,” said Professor Leah Cowen, 91�Թ�'s associate vice-president, research.

“The 91�Թ� congratulates them on this important recognition of their leadership and commitment to promoting knowledge and understanding.”

The new Fellows join 396 members of the 91�Թ� community who currently hold the designation.

Rachel Tyndale, a professor in the department of pharmacology and toxicology and the department of psychiatry in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, has been named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

In a statement, the AAAS praised Tyndale’s “outstanding contributions to understanding the role of drug metabolism in addiction and in particular, how genetic polymorphisms alter behaviours relevant to nicotine addiction.”

Tyndale is a Canada Research Chair in Pharmacogenomics and senior scientist and head of the Pharmacogenetics Lab at the Campbell Family Mental Health Research Institute, CAMH. Over the past decade, she has studied the predictive relationship between genetic variation in drug metabolism and the likelihood of addiction, as well as how metabolism within the brain alters the effects of drugs and toxins. This research will help identify novel mechanisms that can lead to new therapeutic targets and personalized treatment for smoking cessation and other addictions.

“The 91�Թ� community is proud of Rachel Tyndale and the impact of her work on society,” said University Professor Ted Sargent, vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives. “Her research is actively reducing health-care costs while improving the quality of life for millions around the world who struggle with addiction.”

Ten researchers from the 91�Թ� have been named fellows of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences – one of the most esteemed honours for academics in the field.

One of three national academies that make up the Council of Canadian Academies, the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences leverages the expertise of Canada’s leading health sciences researchers to examine the most pressing and complex health challenges of the day, share assessments and recommend actionable solutions.

“The 91�Թ� would like to congratulate these 10 faculty members from our health sciences community on this most deserved recognition of their scholarship and research accomplishments,” said Vivek Goel, 91�Թ�’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives.

“Their election to the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences is a testament to 91�Թ�’s strengths in areas of health sciences that run the gamut from bench to bedside and molecule to population.”
