The role of sex and gender factors in contributing to long-lasting post-concussion symptoms in young people. The neuronal circuits that govern emotional behaviour. Interventions for people living with psychiatric disorders who experience cognitive difficulties. Sex and gender considerations for treating memory-related disorders.

These are the research areas being explored by Eman Nishat, Liv Ansley-Engel, Orly Lipsitz and Quinn Pauli, PhD candidates and recipients of Sex & Gender Differences Competitive Fellowships awarded by the Wilfred and Joyce Posluns Chair in Women’s Brain Health and Aging.

Valued at $5,000, the fellowships are offered to 91�Թ� graduate students enrolled in the Collaborative Program in Neuroscience (CPIN) or graduate programs in psychology, including those offered by the department of psychology in the Faculty of Arts & Science, the department of psychology at 91�Թ� Scarborough and the graduate department of psychological clinical science at 91�Թ� Scarborough. The fellowships aim to empower students to incorporate sex- and/or gender-based considerations and analysis into their research.

The fellowship program is co-sponsored and funded by CPIN, the department of psychology in the Faculty of Arts & Science and the Wilfred and Joyce Posluns Chair in Women’s Brain Health and Aging, which is held by Gillian Einstein, a professor in the department of psychology in the Faculty of Arts & Science who is cross-appointed to the Dalla Lana School of Public Health.

Recipients are expected to provide an end-of-year synopsis of their research findings and participate in a graduate student-led conference on sex, gender and brain health.

Thirteen faculty members from across the 91�Թ� have been appointed Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada – a prestigious distinction given to the country’s most distinguished scholars, artists and scientists.

“The 91�Թ� congratulates these extraordinary researchers on this important recognition of their dedication, leadership and impact,” says Leah Cowen, 91�Թ�’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives. “Across a diverse array of disciplines, they are addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges – and their contributions to their respective fields continue to break new ground.”

Six faculty members at the 91�Թ� – renowned for their pathbreaking leadership in a wide range of disciplines – have been appointed to the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.

“From scientific advances in astrophysics, atmospheric physics and social psychology to timely leadership in climate governance, computer security and privacy, and sexually transmitted infection prevention, these scholars and scientists are making an impact on issues that affect the lives of people across Canada and around the world,” says Leah Cowen, 91�Թ�’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives.

The Black Research Network (BRN) has named Alexander Barnett, Brice Batomen Kuimi and Mireille Norris the inaugural cohort of BRN Faculty Fellows.

The yearlong fellowships award $10,000 apiece to faculty to support research in any academic discipline or multidisciplinary area and mobilize knowledge across the BRN network, the 91�Թ� and the world.

Each of the recipients was honoured for contributions to their respective fields and work to support up-and-coming researchers.

Barnett, an assistant professor in the department of psychology in the Faculty of Arts & Science, was recognized for his research exploring how the brain retains memories and research training program for undergraduate students.

Batomen, an assistant professor in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, will receive support for his research on sports injuries, trauma care and injury prevention related to road safety. He also leads a program providing mentorship to Black postdoctoral students in public health.

Rounding out the cohort is Norris, an assistant professor at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and a geriatrician at Sunnybrook Hospital, whose research is focused on senior care and social justice in medical education. She is also the inaugural faculty lead for Black and Indigenous learners in the department of medicine.

91�Թ� Mississauga psychology professor Tina Malti has been awarded the Alexander von Humboldt Professorship for 2023 to 2027 at Leipzig University.

The €5 million research award will allow Malti to develop and lead a multidisciplinary research team to uncover the roots of child empathy and positive development.

Malti has been at 91�Թ� Mississauga since 2017. She is the director of the Laboratory for Social-Emotional Development and Intervention, and the founding director of the Centre for Child Development, Mental Health, and Policy. Her previous research has focused on the psychological effects of war and violence on children and the social-emotional development and mental health of children.

With her new research funding, Malti wants to identify the root causes of empathy in children, as well as methods to encourage healthy and positive development in children.

“The potential for empathy with others is infinite, even in young children, and we are able to overcome trauma even very severe trauma,” Malti says. “We can become even stronger and even more caring as a result, which sounds paradoxical. But that is very much what also our data shows.”

Malti hopes to work collaboratively between 91�Թ� Mississauga and Leipzig to develop research-based knowledge to share with institutions, organizations, and the general public.

Wil Cunningham, Megan Frederickson, Randall Hansen, Naomi Nagy and Kaley Walker are the first recipients of a new award from the Faculty of Arts & Science created to recognize faculty members whose research achievements have been cited as especially noteworthy.

The Dean’s Research Excellence Award was established with the aim of helping accomplished mid-career researchers compete successfully in national awards competitions. Winners have contributed a wealth of research that has had a significant and sustained influence in their chosen disciplines.

The winners represent a wide range of fields: Cunningham is a professor in the department of psychology, Frederickson is a professor in the department of ecology and evolutionary biology, Hansen is a professor in the department of political science, Nagy is a professor in the department of linguistics and Walker is a professor in the department of physics.

“It is with enormous pride that I announce the inaugural winners of the Dean’s Research Excellence Awards,” says Melanie Woodin, dean of the Faculty of Arts & Science. “The scholars we honour this year are widely recognized as having made an important and ongoing impact on research in their respective fields. As the very first recipients of these annual awards, they set a shining example for those who will follow them.”

The five honourees will each receive $10,000 to further their professional development.

Mishika Mehrotra has been awarded a Gates Cambridge Scholarship. The 91�Թ� Mississauga alumna is one of 74 scholars from 30 countries to receive the prestigious scholarship this year.

Mehrotra, who graduated in 2019, will pursue a PhD in psychology at the University of Cambridge.

“I will study how parent–child conversations relate to young children’s self-regulation, which is an important predictor of their school success, social competence and health,” Mehrotra says. “As part of the Gates Cambridge community, I hope that my research can inform low-cost interventions that equip caregivers with the tools to promote children’s self-regulation.

“I also want to focus on knowledge translation to make research findings more accessible to caregivers, and encourage them to promote children’s wellbeing through evidence-based approaches.”

While at 91�Թ� Mississauga, Mehrotra worked as a research assistant at Professor Tina Malti’s lab.

“I examined why some children feel guilty after violating social norms but others feel happy. The findings of my final-year thesis prompted me think about the role that caregivers can play in promoting children’s development.”

The top graduating student in science at 91�Թ� Mississauga in 2019, Mehrotra says she is grateful to Malti and Professor Emeritus Glenn Schellenberg for their supervision and guidance and Sebastian Dys for his mentorship.
