She is the director of the <a href="http://www.tinamalti.com/">Laboratory for Social-Emotional Development and Intervention</a>, and the founding director of the <a href="https://www.utm.utoronto.ca/ccdmp/">Centre for Child Development, Mental Health, and Policy</a>. Her previous research has focused on the psychological effects of war and violence on children and the social-emotional development and mental health of children.</p> <p>With her new research funding, Malti wants to identify the root causes of empathy in children, as well as methods to encourage healthy and positive development in children.</p> <p>“The potential for empathy with others is infinite, even in young children, and we are able to overcome trauma even very severe trauma,” Malti says. “We can become even stronger and even more caring as a result, which sounds paradoxical. But that is very much what also our data shows.”</p> <p>Malti hopes to work collaboratively between 91Թ Mississauga and Leipzig to develop research-based knowledge to share with institutions, organizations, and the general public.</p> <h3><a href="https://www.utm.utoronto.ca/main-news/utm-psychology-professor-wants-uncover-roots-child-empathy">Read the 91Թ Mississauga story</a></h3> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-source field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">UTM</div> <div class="field field--name-field-top-story-hub-page- field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Top Story (Hub page)</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Fri, 16 Dec 2022 16:42:30 +0000 lanthierj 178581 at Five Faculty of Arts & Science professors recognized with Dean's Research Excellence Awards /celebrates/five-faculty-arts-science-professors-recognized-dean-s-research-excellence-awards <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Five Faculty of Arts &amp; Science professors recognized with Dean's Research Excellence Awards</span> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-type/research-innovation" hreflang="en">Research &amp; Innovation</a></div> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>lanthierj</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2022-12-12T17:25:43-05:00" title="Monday, December 12, 2022 - 17:25" class="datetime">Mon, 12/12/2022 - 17:25</time> </span> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-people field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-people/faculty" hreflang="en">Faculty</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-campus field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-campus/st-george" hreflang="en">St. George</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/faculty-arts-science" hreflang="en">Faculty of Arts &amp; Science</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/department-psychology" hreflang="en">Department of Psychology</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/department-ecology-evolutionary-biology" hreflang="en">Department of Ecology &amp; Evolutionary Biology</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/department-political-science" hreflang="en">Department of Political Science</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/munk-school-global-affairs-public-policy" hreflang="en">Munk School of Global Affairs &amp; Public Policy</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/6856" hreflang="en">Department of Linguistics</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/department-physics" hreflang="en">Department of Physics</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-image-orientation field--type-list-string field--label-hidden field__item">landscape</div> <div class="field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/media/deans-research-excellence-awards-2022.jpg" width="750" height="500" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item">The five recipients of this year’s Dean’s Research Excellence Award (L-R): Megan Frederickson, Kaley Walker, Naomi Nagy, Randall Hansen and Wil Cunningham</div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p><b>Wil Cunningham</b>, <b>Megan Frederickson</b>, <b>Randall Hansen</b>, <b>Naomi Nagy</b> and <b>Kaley Walker</b> are the first recipients of a new award from the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science created to recognize faculty members whose research achievements have been cited as especially noteworthy.</p> <p>The Dean’s Research Excellence Award was established with the aim of helping accomplished mid-career researchers compete successfully in national awards competitions.
