President's Teaching Award

Four faculty members at the 91�Թ� are receiving President’s Teaching Awards, the university’s highest honour for teaching excellence, educational innovation and educational leadership.

President’s Teaching Award recipients are given an annual professional development allowance of $10,000 per year for five years, and are designated as members of the university’s Teaching Academy for a minimum of five years. Academy members may be invited to participate in a range of university events including addressing convocation ceremonies, delivering public lectures, participating in conferences and new faculty orientations, or facilitating teaching and learning workshops.

The winners of the 2024 President’s Teaching Awards are:

Stavroula Andreopoulos – professor, teaching stream, department of biochemistry, Temerty Faculty of Medicine
Franco Taverna – associate professor, teaching stream, human biology program, Faculty of Arts & Science
Timothy Chan – professor, department of mechanical and industrial engineering, Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering and associate vice-president and vice-provost, strategic initiatives
David Tang-Wai – professor, departments of medicine, neurology and geriatric medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine and co-director UHN Memory Clinic

Four faculty members at the 91�Թ� are receiving the President’s Teaching Award, in recognition of their ongoing contributions to educational leadership and innovation and their sustained excellence in teaching.

The winners are:

“Congratulations to this year’s recipients of this very important distinction,” said President Meric Gertler. “91�Թ�’s excellence in teaching is fundamental to our local and global impact, and our educators make a big difference for the better in the lives of our students. Members of the President’s Teaching Academy provide an example and an inspiration for all of us, at the heart of our academic mission.”

Five faculty members were recently honoured with the President’s Teaching Award, the highest honour for teaching at the 91�Թ�.

The award recognizes sustained excellence in teaching and ongoing contributions to educational leadership and innovation. This year’s recipients are:

Maria Assif, associate professor, teaching stream, in the department of English, 91�Թ� Scarborough
Ken Derry, associate professor, teaching stream, in the department of historical studies, 91�Թ� Mississauga
Charlie Keil, professor in the cinema studies institute, Faculty of Arts & Science
Melody Neumann, associate professor, teaching stream, in the department of cell and systems biology, Faculty of Arts & Science
Sanjeev Sockalingam, professor in the department of psychiatry, Temerty Faculty of Medicine

“Through their impressive work, this year’s award recipients demonstrate excellence and innovation in teaching while contributing to an environment that promotes equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility in post-secondary education,” said 91�Թ� President Meric Gertler.

“On behalf of the 91�Թ�, I would like to congratulate all five faculty members on their important achievement. I would also like to thank them for their individual efforts to create a welcoming and intellectually stimulating classroom environment that helps 91�Թ� attract students from around the world.”

For their sustained excellence in teaching and significant contributions in educational leadership, Jennifer Campbell and Jamie Kellar have been awarded the President’s Teaching Award – the highest honour for teaching at the 91�Թ�.

Campbell is a professor, teaching stream, and associate chair, undergraduate, in the department of computer science in the Faculty of Arts & Science. Kellar is an associate professor, teaching stream, and associate dean, academic, in the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy.

“Jennifer Campbell and Jamie Kellar have demonstrated outstanding leadership and creativity in re-imagining the student educational experience at the 91�Թ� and well beyond,” said 91�Թ� President Meric Gertler. “On behalf of the university, I would like to thank them for their exemplary contributions”

Jamie Kellar of the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy has been recognized with the President’s Teaching Award – the highest honour for teaching at the 91�Թ�.

An associate professor, teaching stream, Kellar is also the faculty’s associate dean, academic, and a licensed pharmacist with a passion for teaching that grew from her clinical role as an advanced practice pharmacist in the field of mental health.

Kellar said she was delighted to receive the award, which comes with a five-year designation as a member of the President’s Teaching Academy, as well as a grant for $50,000 to support research and teaching activities.

“The health professions can be a bit insular. We talk to medicine and nursing, but don’t get out of our lane too often,” she said. “The academy will provide exposure to world-class faculty with fresh ideas, and some of what we’re doing in Pharmacy is broadly applicable, so I hope to share those efforts as well.”

Kellar has been an advocate for pharmacy education and practice reform through education research. Her innovative teaching strategies, educational scholarship and leadership have been recognized through the 91�Թ� Early Career Teaching Award, and the Association of Faculties of Pharmacy of Canada National Award for Excellence in Education. She has also received the National Wellspring Pharmacy Leadership Award.

Aarthi Ashok, an associate professor, teaching stream, in 91�Թ� Scarborough’s department of biological sciences, has received the President’s Teaching Award – the highest honour for teaching at the 91�Թ�.

“I’m really excited about the opportunity to have a broader impact on the culture of teaching at the university”, said Ashok, who previously received a UTSC Principal’s Faculty Teaching Award and a 91�Թ� Early Career Teaching Award. “My approach to teaching is in many ways a partnership with my students.”

Her unique approach focuses on developing students' skills in processing and integrating new information to help them achieve success on their own. She also developed community-based, experiential learning opportunities that were so successful they have been expanded to a broader STEM initiative involving instructors from environmental chemistry, mathematics and computer science.

Ashok mentors graduate and undergraduate students, and has produced more than 30 teaching-related manuscripts, workshops and presentations – many with student co-authors.

“What I learn from them every term is astounding – so definitely a shout out to my students to thank them for the amazing experience I’ve had as an educator.”

Professor Micah Stickel of the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering has been recognized with the President’s Teaching Award – the highest honour for teaching at the 91�Թ�.

Stickel joined the Edward S. Rogers Sr. department of electrical and computer engineering in 2007. A professor in the teaching stream, he has served as vice-dean, first year, for the faculty since 2012. Beginning in July, he willl serve as 91�Թ�'s vice-provostial adviser, students, and from October until the end of March he will serve as 91�Թ�'s acting vice-provost, students.

Stickel has led the development of innovative curricular and co-curricular initiatives to enhance the student experience, including a significant redesign of the first-year engineering curriculum and the creation of the course, Orientation to Engineering. An advocate for greater equity and inclusion, he co-created and co-chaired the Engineering Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Action Group in 2018

“As both a teacher and an administrative leader, Micah is continuously moving the Faculty forward in terms of how we engage with our students on the curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular levels,” said Chris Yip, dean of 91�Թ� Engineering. “I know he will continue to make outstanding contributions to 91�Թ�’s educational mission, both in his new vice-provostial roles and now as a member of the university’s Teaching Academy.”

Professor Jeremy Lopez of the Faculty of Arts & Science’s department of English has been awarded the President’s Teaching Award – the highest honour for teaching at the 91�Թ�.

“This award is a great honour, not least because of how high the level of teaching is at 91�Թ�,” Lopez said. “I feel lucky to have been supported by – and to have had the opportunity to learn from – so many other distinguished teachers since I joined the Faculty.”

A scholar of early modern literature,Renaissance literature, Shakespeare and drama, Lopez has taught a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses including large-lecture first-year courses, summer study abroad courses and graduate pedagogical training courses.

“The 91�Թ� prides itself on hiring faculty who bring cutting-edge research to their classes, while providing a learning experience that is both intellectually stimulating and immensely enjoyable,” said department chair Paul Stevens. “Jeremy Lopez is a model of the kind of charismatic teaching and brilliant scholarship that makes the 91�Թ� such a world-class institution.”
