Synge Award</a> from the Royal Society of Canada.</p> <p>The annual award recognizes outstanding research in the mathematical sciences. It is awarded in honour of the late&nbsp;<strong>John Lighton Synge</strong>, former head of 91Թ's department of applied mathematics and one of the first mathematicians working in Canada&nbsp;to receive international recognition for his research.</p> <p>Tsimerman’s research focuses primarily on analytic number theory and arithmetic geometry. He studies whole number solutions to certain types of polynomial equations. One of his most notable research accomplishments is his contribution to a proof for a longstanding mathematical hypothesis called the André-Oort conjecture.</p> <p>“I am truly honoured to accept the Synge Award,” says Tsimerman. “Mathematics is a collective endeavour and I am thrilled to share this honour with a wonderful community of friends, colleagues and students.&nbsp;I am grateful to be given the opportunity to delve even deeper into the challenges and beauty that mathematics offers.”</p> <h3><a href="https://www.artsci.utoronto.ca/news/number-theory-scholar-jacob-tsimerman-receives-prestigious-john-l-synge-award-royal-society#:~:text=Jacob%20Tsimerman%2C%20a%20professor%20of,branches%20of%20the%20mathematical%20sciences.">Read the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science story&nbsp;</a></h3> <h3><a href="https://rsc-src.ca/sites/default/files/24_Award%20Winners_EN.pdf">Read about the Royal Society of Canada award winners</a></h3> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-source field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">FAS</div> <div class="field field--name-field-top-story-hub-page- field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Top Story (Hub page)</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Tue, 10 Sep 2024 17:55:08 +0000 rahul.kalvapalle 309349 at Jeremy Quastel awarded inaugural Paul Lévy Prize in Probability /celebrates/jeremy-quastel-awarded-inaugural-paul-levy-prize-probability <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Jeremy Quastel awarded inaugural Paul Lévy Prize in Probability</span> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-type/research-innovation" hreflang="en">Research &amp; Innovation</a></div> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>rahul.kalvapalle</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-07-18T15:11:12-04:00" title="Thursday, July 18, 2024 - 15:11" class="datetime">Thu, 07/18/2024 - 15:11</time> </span> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-people field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-people/faculty" hreflang="en">Faculty</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-campus field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-campus/st-george" hreflang="en">St. George</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/department-mathematics" hreflang="en">Department of Mathematics</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/faculty-arts-science" hreflang="en">Faculty of Arts &amp; Science</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-image-orientation field--type-list-string field--label-hidden field__item">landscape</div> <div class="field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/2024-07/Jeremy-Quastel-2-crop.jpg" width="750" height="500" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"><p><em>Jeremy Quastel (supplied image)</em></p> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p><strong>Jeremy Quastel</strong>, a professor in the department of mathematics in the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science, has been awarded the inaugural <a href="https://ecm2024sevilla.com/index.php/ems-prizes/call-for-nominations-of-candidates-for-the-paul-levy-prize-in-probability-theory">Paul Lévy Prize in Probability</a> by the European Mathematical Society.</p> <p>The prize honours the memory of the late French mathematician Paul Lévy, who is credited with largely shaping modern probability theory. It is presented to a scientist who has made outstanding contributions to probability theory and its applications.</p> <p>Quastel is a world-renowned specialist in probability theory, stochastic processes and partial differential equations. “When I started working on the KPZ equation 15 years ago, it wasn't something people really thought was possible,” Quastel said, referring to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation, a stochastic partial differential equation that was introduced in 1986 and soon became a default model for random interface growth in physics.</p> <p>“For advances in math, you need to take a real chance and see what happens. I gave it a try and I was very lucky it worked.</p> <p>"Now, we have new problems to investigate: Why these integrable equations in random growth?&nbsp;What happens in three dimensions? More and more students are taking chances and testing their ideas in this area. I’m very excited to see what the future of this field holds.”</p> <p>The Paul Lévy Prize in Probability was established by the European Mathematical Society in collaboration with École Polytechnique, the Foundation of École Polytechnique and the Paul Lévy family, with support from BNP Paribas.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-source field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">FAS</div> <div class="field field--name-field-top-story-hub-page- field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Top Story (Hub page)</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Thu, 18 Jul 2024 19:11:12 +0000 rahul.kalvapalle 308479 at Maya Fishbach, Daniel Litt awarded 2024 Sloan Research Fellowships /celebrates/maya-fishbach-daniel-litt-awarded-2024-sloan-research-fellowships <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Maya Fishbach, Daniel Litt awarded 2024 Sloan Research Fellowships</span> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-type/community" hreflang="en">Community</a></div> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>rahul.kalvapalle</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-02-20T09:35:08-05:00" title="Tuesday, February 20, 2024 - 09:35" class="datetime">Tue, 02/20/2024 - 09:35</time> </span> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-people field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-people/faculty" hreflang="en">Faculty</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-campus field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-campus/st-george" hreflang="en">St. George</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/canadian-institute-theoretical-astrophysics" hreflang="en">Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/department-mathematics" hreflang="en">Department of Mathematics</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/faculty-arts-science" hreflang="en">Faculty of Arts &amp; Science</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/sloan-research-fellowships" hreflang="en">Sloan Research Fellowships</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-image-orientation field--type-list-string field--label-hidden field__item">landscape</div> <div class="field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/2024-02/fishbach-litt.jpg" width="750" height="500" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"><p><em>Assistant Professors Maya Fishbach (L) and Daniel Litt (supplied images)</em></p> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p><strong>Maya Fishbach</strong> and <strong>Daniel Litt</strong> from the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science have been awarded prestigious <a href="https://sloan.org/fellowships/2024-Fellows">2024 Sloan Research Fellowships</a> from the <a href="https://sloan.org/">Alfred P.
