Sarah Kaplan, professor of strategic management, Distinguished Professor of Gender and the Economy and founding director of the Institute for Gender and the Economy (GATE) at the Rotman School of Management, has received the 2024 Distinguished Scholar-Practitioner Award from the Academy of Management.

The award recognizes significant, long-term contributions in areas including successful application of theory or research in practice and authoring of scholarly works that have substantively affected the practice of management.

The awards committee noted Kaplan has showcased exceptional contributions "not just in one but across all areas of the award." It highlighted the impact of GATE on academic and practitioner audiences, as well as Kaplan's research record, use of gender-based insights to develop accessible training programs, contributions to public policy and corporate governance, and impactful media presence.

Nine researchers from the 91�Թ� have received Connaught Community Partnership Research Program awards.

Given by the Connaught Fund, the awards support research carried out in collaboration with non-academic community partners and driven by their needs and priorities. For the 2024-25 funding cycle, the Connaught Committee made the decision to exceed its $300,000 allocation to award a total of $820,000 to nine research initiatives.

“It is a testament to the range and excellence of research proposals that the Connaught Fund will, this year, support more Community Partnership Research Programs than ever before,” said Leah Cowen, 91�Թ�’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives.

“In recent years, projects supported by this program have blossomed into established relationships that are enriching research at our university and poised to have a sustained impact on communities.

“I have no doubt that this will continue to be the case with this year’s awarded projects, which address complex challenges that range from tracking contaminants in traditional foods in First Nations to enhancing the wellness of older adults in retirement living.”

A research team led by Michael Baker, a professor in the department of economics in the Faculty of Arts & Science, has been awarded the Canadian Economics Association’s Doug Purvis Memorial Prize.

The annual award recognizes the authors of significant contributions to Canadian economic policy.

Baker shares the honour with Derek Messacar, doctoral alum of the department of economics and an associate professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland, and Mark Stabile, former faculty member at the Rotman School of Management and the founding director of what would become the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy, who currently serves as a professor and dean of degree programmes and the Europe campus at INSEAD, a business school based in Fontainebleau, France.

The trio was recognized for their paper "Effects of Child Tax Benefits on Poverty and Labor Supply: Evidence from the Canada Child Benefit and Universal Child Care Benefit," which was published in the Journal of Labor Economics.

Baker said he was “honoured” by the recognition. “I knew Doug Purvis briefly at the start of my career and have learned what a positive contribution he made to the economics profession in Canada,” he said. “It is also a pleasure to share this award with a former colleague here at the department and a graduate of our PhD program. I have worked on many projects with both Mark and Derek over the years.”

“It’s gratifying for our department to see Michael, Mark and Derek recognized for their investigations into child poverty alleviation programs,” said Professor Ettore Damiano, chair of the department of economics. “It is very important work, and I am pleased to congratulate all the members of Michael’s team for this award.”

Fourteen researchers at the 91�Թ� are receiving 2023-24 Connaught Innovation Awards to help accelerate the development and commercialization of technologies with high potential to have a positive impact on society.

The Connaught Innovation Award, which provides one-time seed funding to support the development and commercialization of the researchers’ innovative technologies, is backed by the Connaught Fund – the largest internal university research funding program in Canada. Established 52 years ago through the sale of Connaught Medical Research Laboratories, which is known for the discovery and production of insulin, the fund supports 91�Թ� scholars through programs such as the New Researcher Award, Community Partnership Research Program, Major Research Challenge for Black Researchers, McLean Award and international doctoral scholarships.

Five 91�Թ� researchers have received President’s Impact Awards for their important work in AI governance, environmental justice, genomics policy, nutritional sciences and quantum computing.

The awards celebrate and honour faculty members whose research has led to a significant impact beyond academia. Laureates are designated as members of the President’s Impact Academy, and receive a monetary award of $10,000 per year for five years to be used toward their research.

“I would like to congratulate the winners of this year’s President’s Impact Awards for their outstanding work in tackling some of the biggest challenges of our time,” said Barbara Fallon, 91�Թ�'s associate vice-president, research.

“From informing and improving dietary choices to fostering greater alignment between environmental justice and Indigenous communities, these scholars are generating knowledge and ideas that stand to have a tremendous impact beyond academia.

“Their exceptional contributions speak to the important role that 91�Թ� researchers play in improving lives in Canada and around the world.”

This year’s winners are:

Gillian Hadfield, professor in the Faculty of Law and Rotman School of Management, “for contributions impacting access to justice, innovative design for legal and dispute resolution systems in advanced and developing market economies, and governance for artificial intelligence.”

M. Murphy, professor in the Women & Gender Studies Institute and department of history in the Faculty of Arts & Science, “for contributions that consistently move environmental justice research along a collaborative trajectory with Indigenous communities, data practices, and policy-making.”

Yvonne Bombard, scientist at St. Michael’s Hospital, Unity Health Toronto and associate professor in the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, “for her significant contributions in enacting national law against genetic discrimination, improving healthcare options for Canadians, and advancing clinical practice and genomics research.”

Alán Aspuru-Guzik, professor in the department of chemistry and department of computer science in the Faculty of Arts & Science, “for his pioneering work in the fields of artificial intelligence and quantum computing for materials discovery.”

David Jenkins, University Professor in the department of nutritional sciences at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, “for his studies on the health effects of food that have changed how the world makes healthy dietary choices.”

Twenty faculty members from the 91�Թ� have been awarded Canada Research Chairs in support of their research in areas ranging from LGBTQ2S+ youth mental health to quantum photonic technologies and sustainable suburban housing.

Awarded by the Government of Canada, Canada Research Chair positions are designed to reinforce academic research and training excellence with a view to improving depth of knowledge and quality of life, strengthening Canada’s international competitiveness and helping train the next generation of highly skilled people.

Yue Li and Gordon D. Richardson are among the recipients of the 2023 Distinguished Contributions to Accounting Literature Award from the American Accounting Association (AAA), the largest accounting association in the world.

Two influential publications that Li and Richardson co-wrote contributed to their AAA win, including a 2008 study on the relationship between environmental performance and disclosure – cited more than 1,700 times in other academic papers – and their 2011 research on the determinants and consequences of proactive environmental strategies.

“I'm very humbled and honoured to receive this award alongside my co-authors. This recognition is a testament to the dedication and passion I have for environmental accounting research,” said Li, a professor of accounting at the Institute for Management & Innovation, with a cross-appointment at the Rotman School of Management.

Li, director of the master of management and professional accounting program at 91�Թ� Mississauga, studies the relationship between firms that voluntarily disclose their environmental strategies and their performance – both environmental and financial. He focuses on corporate environmental performance, corporate social responsibility and sustainability management.

Richardson, a professor of accounting at the Rotman School of Management, is a capital markets researcher who has published numerous studies related to environmental accounting involving greenhouse gases and corporate social responsibility. He specializes in accounting-based valuation models and the value relevance for investors of financial statements. In 2022, Richardson was inducted into the Canadian Accounting Hall of Fame.

The AAA award, presented in the form of unique glass art pieces and a $2,500 prize, will be given to Li, Richardson and their two co-authors at the 2023 AAA Annual Meeting next month in Denver, Colo.

Two 91�Թ� faculty members are being recognized with awards from the Bank of Canada for their research and expertise in areas important to the bank’s core functions.

Liyan Yang, a professor of finance at the Rotman School of Management, has been honoured with the 2023 Bank of Canada Fellowship Award.

Yang, who holds the Peter L. Mitchelson/SIT Investment Associates Foundation Chair in Investment Strategy at the Rotman School, is an internationally acclaimed scholar with expertise in financial markets, institutions and behavioural finance. His research proposes a coherent framework – both theoretical and empirical – for understanding how investors interact in financial markets and their effect on regulatory policy and the overall welfare of the economy.

A record 17 91�Թ� faculty members are being recognized with the President’s Impact Award for the significant impact of their research across Canada and beyond.

Ajay Agrawal of the Rotman School of Management, George Dei of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, Ito Peng of the Faculty of Arts & Science and Yu Sun of the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering are each receiving individual awards.

A team award, meanwhile, recognizes 13 leaders of Ontario’s COVID-19 Science Advisory Table from the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, Faculty of Arts & Science, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, many of whom also hold appointments across 91�Թ�'s hospital partner network at Baycrest Health Sciences Centre, Hospital for Sick Children, Sinai Health System, Unity Health, University Health Network and Women’s College Hospital. They are: Upton Allen, Karen Born, Adalsteinn Brown, Peter Jüni, Linda Mah, Andrew Morris, Kumar Murty, Fahad Razak, Paula Rochon, Beate Sander, Brian Schwartz, Nathan Stall and Robert Steiner.

Each winner is designated a member of the President’s Impact Academy, which advocates for sustained excellence in research and innovation impact within and outside the university.

“These awards represent how 91�Թ�’s research community is coming together tackle some of today’s toughest problems and making breakthroughs that result in real-world change,” says Leah Cowen, 91�Թ�’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives.

“From global issues to micro-scale innovations, this year’s laureates have shown themselves to be visionaries in their respective fields and consummate collaborators – working with scholars across disciplines and partnering with community members, public stakeholders, industry leaders and policymakers to address our current challenges and drive progress toward a brighter future.”
