91�Թ� alumna Samantha Eby has been named the recipient of the 2020 Prix de Rome in Architecture for Emerging Practitioners.

The prestigious $34,000 prize is awarded annually by the Canada Council for the Arts to a recent architecture graduate who has demonstrated potential in contemporary architectural design.

It’s the third consecutive year the prize has been won by 91�Թ� alumni. Eby, who graduated from the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape & Design’s master of architecture program in 2019, follows Kinan Hewitt, who graduated in 2018, and David Verbeek, who graduated in 2017.

Eby “balances a deep curiosity for the economies that contribute to architecture and urbanism with a provocative and tangible design sensibility," says her thesis advisor, Assistant Professor Michael Piper.

Once travel restrictions are lifted, Eby plans to use her new funding on research trips to Australia, Germany and Austria to visit and document examples of collective and non-profit housing developments.

"My research is looking for unrealized opportunities in Canada for new forms of housing that are outside the current practices of financing and site development," she says. "I'm looking at questions of how housing in Canada can be more than just a commodity, and how, by using communal financing and development practices, we can make multi-unit housing more accessible, sustainable, and desirable."

Batoul Faour has been named the first-prize winner in the 2021 Avery Review Essay Prize competition.

A Lebanese Canadian designer and researcher, Faour is a student in the post-professional architecture program at the 91�Թ�’s John H. Daniels Faculty' of Architecture, Landscape and Design. Her winning essay is a distillation of her thesis project, which critically examines the role of architectural glass in exacerbating the damage from last year's catastrophic port explosion in Beirut.

The essay, which won Faour a $4,000 prize and top billing in the Avery Review's April issue, describes the way shattered window glass piled up in Beirut's streets after the blast. It traces the historical and contemporary uses of glass in Lebanon to reveal the politics behind the fragile material.

The Avery Review is a monthly architecture journal published by the Office of Publications at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture. The April issue is readable online and you can read Faour’s winning essay here.

A team of Canadian students, including two from the 91�Թ�, recently took home top prize in the Urban Land Institute/ Gerald D. Hines Hines Student Competition – the first time a non-American team has won the prestigious contest.

Ruotian Tan, a master of urban design student, and Chenyi Xu, a master of architecture student, were both members of the winning team, which also included students from York University and Ryerson University.

“It was a great multidisciplinary learning experience for me,” Tan said earlier this year. “It was a very good chance for me to practice and get some good results before I actually go into a professional career.”

The annual competition asks entrants to find a solution to a complex urban design problem – in this case, by developing master plans for the East Village, a neighbourhood in Kansas City, Mo. More than 100 teams from the U.S., Singapore and Canada competed for the US$50,000 prize.

The Canadian team “pushed a new paradigm for an urban neighborhood based on the strong regional legacy of agriculture,” ULI Hines jury chair Diana Reid wrote in a statement. “Their financing plan and design enabled economic resilience through small scale food growth and distribution, local culinary incubation, and research-driven employment opportunities.”

Victoria Cardoso, Erman Akyol, and Eugenia Wong have been recognized by the SHIFT Challenge, a biennial competition hosted by the Ontario Association of Architects, that invites students and architects to address social challenges through design.

The three first-year students in the master of architecture program at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape & Design created a project that was one of five honoured by this year’s challenge.

Their project, originally created for a fall semester course taught by Professor Ted Kesik, proposes a community-oriented redesign of Ontario Place, the disused public amusement park located on a small chain of artificial islands off Toronto's western shoreline. The students will present their work during the OAA's Virtual Conference at an online SHIFT event that will begin at 4:30 p.m. on May 20, and be viewable online on the OAA's YouTube channel.

“This was really an opportunity for us to open ourselves up to the field,” Wong says. “We'll get to present our project not just to teachers and our colleagues, but also to architects, landscape designers, and urban designers. We're hoping to get our proposal out to decision makers and important stakeholders for the site.”

David Martell, a professor emeritus in the forestry program at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape & Design, has received the 2020 Ember Award for Excellence in Wildland Fire Science from the International Association of Wildland Fire.

The award recognizes scientists who have demonstrated sustained excellence in wildland fire research.

“Throughout a career that has spanned 45 years, David Martell has been renowned for his creativity, collaboration and important contributions to renewable resource management and forest fire science,” said University Professor Ted Sargent, vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives. “His innovative modelling helped the Province of Ontario determine whether to expand its air tanker fleet – and his research has helped solve challenges at the national and international level.”

The IAWF said in a statement that Martell strongly influenced fire leaders and managers across Canada “because he dedicated time to understanding their operational point of view, integrating academic and operational perspectives, and absorbing the real application of fire management.”

Martell is the co-director of the Daniels Faculty's Fire Management Systems Laboratory, where he conducts research on fire in boreal forest ecosystems.

“This award recognizes research that I carried out in collaboration with my graduate students, research assistants, other researchers, and forest fire management personnel of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (OMNRF),” Martell said. “I'm very grateful for their contributions, and for the financial support I've received from the OMNRF, as well as the 91�Թ� and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.”

Blanche Lemco van Ginkel, former dean of the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, has received the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Gold Medal in recognition of her significant and lasting contributions to architecture in Canada.

Lemco van Ginkel, who became dean in 1977, is believed to be first woman to have led a school of architecture in North America. She taught at the Daniels Faculty until 1993.

Her notable achievements as an architect include studies of Old Montreal that helped preserve the city’s historic core amid highway construction, a design for Bowring Park in St. John’s, and a preliminary plan for Expo 67.

The award jury wrote that Lemco van Ginkel “has had a profound influence on architectural thinking, education and practice. She has been an inspiration to generations of architects, and has consistently furthered the architectural and planning discourse through publication and practice.”

In 2015, the Daniels Faculty established the Professor Blanche Lemco van Ginkel Admission Scholarship, in recognition of her achievements and leadership.

Richard Sommer, dean of the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, is one of the recipients of this year’s Distinguished Professor Awards from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA).

The awards recognize individuals whose work provides significant insight into the understanding and advancement of architecture and architectural education.

Since arriving at the 91�Թ� in 2009, Professor Sommer has led a transformation of the Daniels Faculty. Mobilizing talented colleagues, he built an inventive undergraduate foundation in architectural studies, renewed the school’s three graduate professional programs, created a PhD in Architecture, Landscape, and Design, incorporated 91�Թ�’s programs in art, curatorial studies and forestry, and ultimately quadrupled the size of the school. His boldest achievement – overseeing the construction of the award-winning One Spadina Crescent – was the result of a collaboration with a large design team led by NADAAA.

Sommer will receive his medallion and be elected to ACSA’s College of Distinguished Professors at the organization's national conference in San Diego on March 12.

Keenan Ngo and Ozyka Videlia have won the $2,500 grand prize in a student competition to create innovative and space-saving designs for condo interiors and amenity spaces.

The two students from the 91�Թ�'s John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design focused on the kitchen and bathroom – spaces with plenty of design challenges. For the kitchen, they came up with an innovative system of cabinets that slide vertically on the wall, to give the condo occupant easier access to the upper shelves. Hidden catches lock the assembly into place at the desired height. To replace a full-sized breakfast bar, they devised a skinny bar top that could fold away, accordion-style, into the wall of the unit, freeing up precious floor space.

For the bathroom, Ngo and Videlia came up with a plan that allows for a tub, a separate shower and a partitioned-off toilet-and-sink area within 40 square feet.

Ivy Chan and Wesley Fong, both Master of Architecture students, were named semi-finalists for their kitchen and bathroom designs. They won $500.

The contest was a partnership between Toronto developers Urban Capital and Spotlight Development.

Seshu Iyengar and Joel Goodwin, both first-year PhD students from the Maritimes, have been selected as the recipients of the C. David Naylor University Fellowships.

Established with the support of the Arthur L. Irving Family Foundation, the fellowship, named after 91�Թ� President Emeritus David Naylor, awards $30,000 to outstanding students from Atlantic Canada who are entering the first year of a full-time doctoral or doctoral-stream program.

Iyengar, a graduate of the University of New Brunswick, is working on a PhD in physics at 91�Թ� Mississauga. His research focuses on biological physics with a view to developing better drugs for cancer treatments, enhancing genetic therapies and improving patient interventions.

Goodwin,a graduate of Acadia University, is pursuing a PhD in the forestry program at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design. He is studying the optimization of traps for invasive beetle species, with field research to be conducted in northern Ontario and central Louisiana.
