Cope Scholar Award by the <a href="https://cen.acs.org/acs-news/ACS-announces-2025-National-Award/102/i27">American Chemical Society (ACS)</a>.</p> <p>The annual award recognizes outstanding achievements in the field of organic chemistry that have become apparent during the preceding half-decade.</p> <p>“Since 2006, my research group has been involved in the study of amphoteric molecules. They show both electrophilic and nucleophilic reactivity,” said Yudin. "This chemistry has allowed us to prepare a broad range of structures with useful properties. It is our work in this area that is being recognized.”&nbsp;</p> <p>Yudin, who will accept the award and deliver a lecture about his work at the 2025 ACS National Meeting in Washington, D.C. next summer, said he finds inspiration in the elegance of chemical structures and the diverse ways in which they react with one another. “I like the inherent logic of organic chemistry," he said.</p> <h3><a href="https://www.chemistry.utoronto.ca/news/yudin-wins-cope-scholar-award">Read the department of chemistry story</a></h3> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-source field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">FAS</div> <div class="field field--name-field-top-story-hub-page- field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Top Story (Hub page)</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Wed, 16 Oct 2024 14:50:09 +0000 rahul.kalvapalle 309708 at Geoffrey Hinton wins 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics /celebrates/geoffrey-hinton-wins-2024-nobel-prize-physics <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Geoffrey Hinton wins 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics</span> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-type/research-innovation" hreflang="en">Research &amp; Innovation</a></div> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>rahul.kalvapalle</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-10-08T16:54:37-04:00" title="Tuesday, October 8, 2024 - 16:54" class="datetime">Tue, 10/08/2024 - 16:54</time> </span> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-people field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-people/faculty" hreflang="en">Faculty</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-campus field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-campus/st-george" hreflang="en">St. George</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-awards-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/artificial-intelligence" hreflang="en">Artificial Intelligence</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/department-computer-science" hreflang="en">Department of Computer Science</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/faculty-arts-science" hreflang="en">Faculty of Arts &amp; Science</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/celebrates/awards-tags/vector-institute" hreflang="en">Vector Institute</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-image-orientation field--type-list-string field--label-hidden field__item">landscape</div> <div class="field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/2024-10/DSCF5888-1-crop.jpg" width="750" height="500" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"><p><em>(photo by Lisa Lightbourn)</em></p> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p><a href="https://discover.research.utoronto.ca/26059-geoffrey-e-hinton"><strong>Geoffrey Hinton</strong></a>, a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.provost.utoronto.ca/awards-funding/university-professors/">University Professor</a>&nbsp;Emeritus of computer science at the 91łÔąĎ, has been awarded the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/physics/2024/summary/">2024 Nobel Prize in Physics</a>.</p> <p>Awarded since 1901, the Nobel Prize in Physics is one of five prizes&nbsp;established by the will of <strong>Alfred Nobel</strong>&nbsp;and honours individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field.</p> <p>Hinton, widely regarded as the “godfather of AI,” shared the prize with&nbsp;<strong>John J. Hopfield</strong>&nbsp;of Princeton University&nbsp;for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks.&nbsp;</p> <p>Hinton was recognized for his use of the Hopfield network – a neural network invented by his co-laureate – as the foundation for a new network called the Boltzmann machine that can learn to recognize elements within a given type of data.</p> <p>“On behalf of the 91łÔąĎ, I am absolutely delighted to congratulate University Professor Emeritus Geoffrey Hinton on receiving the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics,” said 91łÔąĎ President&nbsp;<strong>Meric Gertler</strong>. “The 91łÔąĎ community is immensely proud of his historic accomplishment.”&nbsp;</p> <p>Prime Minister <strong>Justin Trudeau</strong> lauded Hinton for being both “a stalwart in the field” of AI and an “outspoken advocate” for its responsible use.&nbsp;“Canada is at the forefront of AI technology thanks to trailblazers like Dr.&nbsp;Hinton,” <a href="https://www.pm.gc.ca/en/news/statements/2024/10/08/statement-prime-minister-dr-geoffrey-e-hinton-being-awarded-2024-nobel">Trudeau said in a statement</a>. “His curiosity for discovery and contributions to innovation will inspire generations to come. On behalf of all Canadians, I congratulate him on his remarkable achievement.”</p> <p>Hinton, who joined 91łÔąĎ as a professor of computer science in 1987, said he was "flabbergasted" at the accolade.&nbsp;“I had no expectations of this,” said Hinton, who is also chief scientific adviser at the Vector Institute, which he co-founded. “I am extremely surprised and I'm honoured to be included.”&nbsp;</p> <p>Hinton's Nobel Prize is the latest in a long list of honours which includes the Association for Computing Machinery’s <a href="/news/am-turing-award-nobel-prize-computing-given-hinton-and-two-other-ai-pioneers">A.M. Turing Award in 2019</a> – widely considered “the Nobel Prize of computing” – alongside collaborators <strong>Yann LeCun</strong> and <strong>Yoshua Bengio</strong>, election to the&nbsp;U.S. National Academy of Sciences, a Royal Medal from the Royal Society, Companion of the Order of Canada and Fellow of the Royal Societies of Canada and London.</p> <h3><a href="/news/geoffrey-hinton-wins-nobel-prize">Read the 91łÔąĎ News story</a></h3> <h3><a href="https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/physics/2024/press-release/">Read the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announcement</a></h3> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-source field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">UTC</div> <div class="field field--name-field-top-story-hub-page- field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Top Story (Hub page)</div> <div class="field__item">On</div> </div> Tue, 08 Oct 2024 20:54:37 +0000 rahul.kalvapalle 309814 at
