The 91�Թ�'s Sustainability Pathways Program, an initiative of the President's Advisory Committee on the Environment, Climate Change and Sustainability (CECCS), was shortlisted for a 2024 QS Reimagine Education Award.

Given by London-based Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the Reimagine Education Awards honour innovative pedagogical approaches that boost learning outcomes and employability, as well as effective methods of teaching sustainability.

91�Թ�'s Sustainability Pathways Program was shortlisted in the category of sustainability literacy. The program combines courses, co-curricular activities, campus-as-a-living lab projects and capstone leadership training to educate students across 91�Թ�'s three campuses.

“Our goal is to ‘reach the rest’ – students who would not otherwise engage with sustainability as part of their degrees," said John Robinson, CECCS co-chair and professor in the School of the Environment and Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy. "This approach is helping to shape the next generation of sustainability leaders, regardless of their field of study, while also providing a transformative educational experience for students.”

The recognition comes after 91�Թ� was named the most sustainable university in the world by QS for the second year in a row.

The 91�Թ� has been named one of Greater Toronto's Top Employers by Mediacorp Canada Inc. for the 19th consecutive year.

The competition recognizes employers with exceptional human resources programs and forward-thinking workplace policies. Winners are announced in a special magazine distributed online in The Globe & Mail.

91�Թ� was recognized for supporting the families of its employees through an array of resources, including the dedicated Family Care Office, on-site child care options and a variety of family-friendly spaces; encouraging employees to keep fit and stay healthy with subsidized memberships to fitness facilities, health benefits coverage that extends to retirees with no age limit; and encouraging employees to save for the future with generous contributions to a defined benefit pension plan.

"The world is changing so fast that employers must constantly evolve to meet their employees’ needs", said Kelly Hannah-Moffat, 91�Թ�'s vice-president, people strategy, equity and culture.

Christine Szustaczek, the 91�Թ�'s vice-president, communications, has been inducted into the Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS)'s College of Fellows.

CPRS names fellows in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the development of public relations and communications management.

Szustaczek has headed 91�Թ� Communications since 2023, overseeing an award-winning, tri-campus team of writers, communications strategists, brand marketing professionals, digital and media relations specialists, videographers and photographers. Her role in enhancing internal communications and sharing 91�Թ�’s story – including the wide-ranging impact of the university’s world-leading research and scholarship – has been instrumental in the department’s success.

“I am honoured to join the ranks of so many giants in our field,” Szustaczek said. “Their collective achievement has transformed our profession - and the places we all serve - for the better. The fact that this award is peer reviewed makes the recognition all the more special.

“I thank the Canadian Public Relations Society for this tremendous honour and I commit to continuing to uphold my work to the highest standards expected of us so that I too can strive to be a model for others.”

The 91�Թ� has announced the winners of the 2024 Awards of Excellence, a prestigious program presented annually in collaboration with the 91�Թ� Alumni Association (UTAA) to recognize outstanding and inspiring faculty, staff, librarians and students.

The 91�Թ� Scarborough’s Indigenous House, a building that will be dedicated to learning about Indigenous culture and ways of knowing, has received a 2023 Award of Merit from Canadian Architect.

The award is given to architectural projects that bring innovation to the world of design and balance aesthetics with the effectiveness of social spaces.

Indigenous House was designed by Alfred Waugh, principal architect at Formline Architecture and a member of the Fond du Lac Denesuline Nation of Saskatchewan, along with LGA Architecture Partners. Waugh drew inspiration for the design from a traditional winter wigwam and longhouse, and also took into account suggestions of local Indigenous communities, elders and knowledge keepers.

Claire Weisz, a juror for the award, says the committee looked at many projects designed to serve Indigenous people. “Finding an appropriate and functional architectural expression was not always successful,” Weisz said. “In this case, it is: a new form of architecture consciously emerges from the landscape and looks to Indigenous precedents.”

Marc Couture, director, sustainability and energy management, at the 91�Թ�’s Sustainability Office, is one of Canada’s Clean16 Award recipients and a Clean50 honouree.

For more than a decade, the Clean50 Awards have recognized 50 Canadian sustainability leaders who facilitate understanding, collaboration and innovation in the fight to limit global warming to 1.5 C above pre-industrial levels. The leader in each category receives the Clean16 award.  Last year, 91�Թ�'s Ron Saporta was recognized with the award.

Couture was recognized for his leadership in developing the climate positive campus strategy for the St. George campus and implementing a tri-campus sustainability performance standard.

“Through Marc’s leadership and technical expertise, the university is undertaking a radical transformation of its nearly 200-year-old campus,” says Luke Barber, acting chief operating officer, property services and sustainability at 91�Թ�’s Facilities & Services. “This means setting a goal of moving the campus beyond net-zero to climate positive by eliminating more carbon than it produces.”

The industry-leading tri-campus sustainability performance standard aims to hold 91�Թ�’s $5-billion capital program and $40 million per year in infrastructure projects to the strictest energy and carbon standards in the country, Barber says, adding this standard has already been applied to over 80 capital projects totaling more than $3 billion in value. This has resulted in energy and carbon designs that have already helped 91�Թ� avoid an incremental 8,500 tonnes of carbon annually.

Mark Bennett, a graphic designer in the 91�Թ� Temerty Faculty of Medicine’s office of communications, has received the inaugural Type Directors Club (TDC) Ezhishin Scholarship.

Named after the Ojibwe word for “s/he leaves a mark,” the annual $5,000 scholarship was established by the TDC and Google and recognizes “First Nation and Native American people in Canada and the U.S. who exemplify a creative practice that explores typography, type design or relevant linguistic work.”

The designer/art director for Temerty Medicine’s award-winning alumni magazine, UofTMed, Bennett is also a part-time architectural studies student at 91�Թ�'s John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design. He has explored typography for several years, and his work was featured most recently in the Inuit Art Quarterly. He also contributed to the new typeface and visual identity of the Winnipeg Art Gallery-Qaumajuq.

Bennett was presented with the scholarship at the TDC ASCENDERS event in New York City on September 7.

The 91�Թ� has been recognized by Forbes as one of Canada’s Best Employers for Diversity 2023.

Forbes and Statista selected Canada’s Best Employers for Diversity based on independent surveys of more than 12,000 employees working part-time or full-time for companies employing at least 500 people in Canada. Companies were also assessed on gender diversity among their top executives and/or board members, and indicators such as tangible diversity-related initiatives, resource groups for employees, and proactive communication of diversity. The recipients were announced on July 11.

“Being named one of Canada’s Best Employers for Diversity speaks to the deep commitment and hard work of faculty members, librarians, and staff across the 91�Թ�,” said Kelly Hannah-Moffat, vice-president, People Strategy, Equity & Culture. “Our shared efforts to foster a culture of belonging at 91�Թ� are making a significant impact, and we will continue to build on this progress as we work to embed equity, diversity, and inclusion into all aspects of life at the university.”

The 91�Թ� has recognized staff and librarians from across its three campuses with the inaugural Exemplary 91�Թ� Ambassador Awards (EUTA).

Eighteen individual and six team recipients were honoured at a presentation ceremony held recently at Desautels Hall.

Established in 2022, the EUTA Award recognizes the contributions and achievements of librarians and staff, as individuals or in teams, who have furthered the strategic priorities of their unit, department, faculty, or division, and made a significant, positive impact on the university.

"The recipients have set an extremely high bar for future candidates,” President Meric Gertler said. “On behalf of the 91�Թ�, and your many friends and colleagues in our community, thank you for your excellent – and innovative – service and remarkable dedication to the 91�Թ�.

“You are a wonderful inspiration for all of us to continue working together to make the 91�Թ� a better place."
