The annual fellowships are designed to offer doctoral students the opportunity to explore the world of public scholarship. Fellows focus on engaging the public through their scholarly work – this can take a range of forms, from describing their work in a public forum to partnering with a school, community organization or cultural institution in an ongoing two-way exchange of knowledge and practices.

"The School of Graduate Studies is proud to support the creative work being done by our Connaught PhDs for Public Impact fellows as they find novel ways to engage the public with the incredible research being done at 91�Թ�," said Vina Goghari, vice-dean, research and program innovation at the School of Graduate Studies. "We are grateful for the generous support from the Connaught Fund in enabling this type of innovative scholarship, and we congratulate this new cohort of fellows as they begin work on their projects."

Syed Nabeel Haider Shah, a PhD graduate of the Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, has been recognized with the 2024 Donnelly Centre Research Thesis Prize.

The annual prize recognizes the quality, originality and significance of a PhD graduate’s work.

Shah’s research examined newly identified RNA binding proteins, two of which were found to have potential roles in cancer development and treatment. One of the proteins was found to be able to enhance the ability of cancer cells to develop into tumours, while the other was found to perform the reverse role by suppressing growth of tumour cells.

“Nabeel has had an extraordinary PhD career,” said his supervisor Jack Greenblatt, University Professor in the department of molecular genetics. “He published 25 peer-reviewed papers from research he conducted over the course of his studies, with lead authorship on 12 of them – and he continues to publish papers from his thesis work. Nabeel made the most of his PhD by contributing significantly and widely across biomedicine.”

Shah credits Greenblatt for being a supportive adviser who provided guidance while allowing him to work independently to develop research projects. “I believe if I was a PhD student in any other lab, it wouldn’t have been possible for me to accomplish as much as I did,” said Shah.

Mina Tadrous, an assistant professor in the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, has received the Dr. Maurice McGregor Award for a Rising Star in Health Technology Assessment from Canada’s Drug Agency.

This award honours an early-career professional who is pushing the science of health technology assessment (HTA) forward and helping to grow Canada’s reputation for excellence in the field.

Tadrous conducts research that has led to meaningful change at both the policy and patient level. At the Ontario Drug Policy Research Network, he played a key role in implementing a novel framework for drug class reviews that enhanced standard HTA methods with patient perspectives and real-world evidence.

Tadrous, who was appointed a tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Real World Evidence and Pharmaceutical Policy earlier this year, has also led work related to drug shortages, devising strategies that will help to safeguard Canada’s drug inventory.

Gordon Anderson, a professor emeritus in the department of economics in the Faculty of Arts & Science, has received the Kendrick Prize from the International Association for Research in Income and Wealth (IARIW).

The annual award recognizes a paper published in The Review of Income and Wealth during the previous calendar year.

Anderson was recognized for his paper, "Has Canada’s 21st Century Grand Gender Convergence Stalled? Male and Female Income and Human Resource Stock Distributions Viewed Through an Equal Opportunity Lens," which was published in December 2023.

“The prize means a great deal to me because gender differences are a particular focus of my recent and ongoing research on economic well-being, health and human resources,” said Anderson, who retired in 2018 after spending three decades teaching at both the St. George campus and 91�Թ� Mississauga.

“Gordon Anderson is a remarkable example to young economists,” said Professor Ettore Damiano, chair of the department of economics. "He stays current and engaged with his field and continues to publish meaningful work while enjoying his children and grandchildren.

"I am very pleased to see the IARIW recognize his work and award him this honour.”

Lisa Cranley, an associate professor in the Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, has been awarded a 2024 Compassion and Artificial Intelligence Fellowship by AMS Healthcare.

The fellowship recognizes researchers for showcasing compassionate leadership in health care through visionary projects that aim to help care providers navigate a complex and rapidly evolving health-care landscape.

Cranley's research involves the co-development of a high-fidelity prototype of a digital app that will support compassionate, person-centred care for residents of long-term care homes by supporting them and their family caregivers in developing care plans that give them a sense of autonomy and voice in their care provision.

“Person-centred care is compassionate care, and for me this means ensuring that my research will advance compassionate care delivery in an innovative way while being relevant and useful to the populations that it will serve," Cranley said.

Thirty-four scholars from the 91�Թ� will receive research infrastructure funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) through its John R. Evans Leaders Fund.

The fund aims to support universities’ research infrastructure and help them compete in recruiting and retaining exceptional researchers. 91�Թ� projects will receive a total of $10.6 million in the latest round of funding, announced Sept. 13, 2024.

“From exploring the links between neural activity and stress to designing next-generation spectrographs to enhance our understanding of celestial phenomena, these research projects are poised to expand knowledge in an array of crucial fields,” said Leah Cowen, 91�Թ�’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives.

“I would like to congratulate all the recipients of this funding support, and express 91�Թ�’s gratitude to the Canada Foundation for Innovation for its continued backing of critical research infrastructure.”

Douglas Sanderson (Amo Binashii), a professor, Prichard Wilson Chair in Law and Public Policy and decanal adviser on Indigenous issues at the Faculty of Law, will receive an honorary doctorate from Concordia University.

The university awards honorary doctorates recognizing the exemplary contributions of distinguished individuals. Sanderson is recognized for his expertise and leadership in Indigenous and Aboriginal law.

Sanderson, who is Beaver Clan from the Opaskwayak Cree Nation, completed his juris doctor (JD) at 91�Թ� and went on to become the managing editor of the inaugural edition of the Indigenous Law Journal. He has served as a senior advisor at what is now Ontario’s Ministry of Indigenous Affairs and First Nations Economic Reconciliation, as well as Ontario’s Ministry of the Attorney General.

He's also the co-author of the award-winning book, Valley of the Birdtail: An Indian Reserve, a White Town, and the Road to Reconciliation, co-written with his former student, Andrew Stobo Sniderman.

“As the decanal advisor on Indigenous issues at our faculty, Douglas's work has had far-reaching impact beyond the classroom to the very core of our community and the law's role in reconciliation,” says University Professor Jutta Brunnée, dean of the Faculty of Law and James Marshall Tory Dean’s Chair. “An honorary degree from Concordia University is a wonderful recognition of his expertise and scholarship.”

Sanderson will address graduates and receive his honorary doctorate at Concordia’s Faculty of Arts and Science ceremony on Oct. 15.

Two faculty members and a doctoral candidate at the 91�Թ� have been shortlisted for the 2024 Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Impact Awards.

Athanasios Litsios and Lucie Wolf, postdoctoral fellows in the Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, have been recognized with 2024 Research Excellence Awards.

The awards support researchers who are collaborating across disciplinary boundaries to advance innovations in health and medicine.

Litsios, who is conducting his research under the supervision of Brenda Andrews, University Professor in the department of molecular genetics, led a collaborative effort that generated the first genome-scale characterization of protein movement within the cell throughout the cell cycle.

Wolf, who received the 2023 Charles H. Best Fellowship, was recognized for her work identifying proteins that could function as regulators of the Wnt signalling pathway to target cancer cells – research conducted under the supervision of Stephane Angers, a professor in the departments of biochemistry and pharmaceutical sciences at Temerty Medicine.

“Athanasios Litsios and Lucie Wolf are integral members of the Donnelly Centre community,” said Angers, who is director of the Donnelly Centre. “They have contributed enormously to their respective labs and research fields, while simultaneously working to improve scientific engagement and community building through outreach.

"Both postdoctoral fellows have demonstrated leadership and initiative during their time at the Donnelly Centre.”

Caeleb "Rae" Goff, an alum of the Faculty of Law's juris doctor (JD) program, has been awarded the Royal Society of Canada's Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella Prize for 2024.

The annual award, valued at $1,000, is given to a graduating law student from each of Canada's law schools who is poised to positively influence equity and social justice in Canada or globally. It is named in honour of University College and Faculty of Law alum Rosalie Abella, a retired Supreme Court of Canada justice who is celebrated for her visionary intellectual contributions and commitment to equality and equity.

Goff, who graduated from the JD program this past spring, was recognized for her ongoing commitment to helping others navigate barriers to accessing legal education, while recognizing socio-economic challenges and the need for mentorship and support.

As vice-president, student life for the Students' Law Society (SLS), she served on the dean's committees for admissions and financial aid. She also established the friendship committee, aimed at helping students find a support network in law school, and was an executive of the First-Generation Network and the Peer Mental Health Support Program.

Goff, who has a background in social work, was a caseworker with Advocates for Injured Workers and is now completing a clerkship with the New Brunswick Court of Appeal.
