Maria Hupfield, an assistant professor in 91�Թ� Mississauga's department of English and drama, has received a 2025 Eiteljorg Contemporary Art Fellowship from the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in Indiana.

Given every other year, the fellowship aims to bring Indigenous contemporary art to the forefront and cast a spotlight on the works of leading Indigenous artists from across the U.S. and Canada.

Hupfield, who is Anishinaabe and a member of Wasauksing First Nation, holds a Canada Research Chair in Transdisciplinary Indigenous Arts and is the director and lead artist at 91�Թ� Mississauga's Indigenous Creation Studio. She also works with graduate students in the master of visual studies program at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design at 91�Թ�.

Her current research program comprises a community medicine garden, Indigenous creation studio and a living archive, with each space designed to facilitate the development of creative work grounded in Indigenous oral traditions and the natural world.

Fifteen faculty members from 91�Թ� have been elected fellows of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) for 2024 in recognition of excellence in health sciences.

Election to CAHS fellowship is considered one of the highest honours for individuals in the Canadian health sciences community.

“Election to the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences acknowledges outstanding contributions to the health sciences,” said Trevor Young, 91�Թ�'s vice-president and provost and the president of CAHS, in a press release. “We are proud of these fellows’ accomplishments, and we are honoured to welcome them to the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.”

The 91�Թ� scholars elected to 2024 CAHS fellowships are:

The 91�Թ� has recognized 51 faculty members across its three campuses with Connaught New Researcher Awards.

The annual awards support early-stage researchers in the humanities, social sciences, life sciences, physical sciences, engineering and other fields – and aim to enhance their competitiveness for external awards. They are part of the Connaught Fund, Canada’s largest internal university research funding program.

“The Connaught New Researcher Awards are designed to help accelerate the research programs of our hugely talented early-career scholars as they establish themselves in their respective fields,” said Leah Cowen, 91�Թ�’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives.

“I am excited to see their work on a range of important issues such as next-generation vaccines for sexually transmitted diseases, decarbonization retrofits and housing affordability, and the physics of wildfire-generated storms."

The winner of this award for 2024 is Titilola Aiyegbusi from the department of English in the Faculty of Arts & Science.

The recipient of the CI Teaching Excellence Award is Kat Furtado from the department of classics in the Faculty of Arts & Science.

Kent Moore, vice-principal, research at the 91�Թ� Mississauga and Distinguished Professor of Theoretical Geophysics of Climate Change in the department of chemical and physical sciences, has been awarded a Patterson Distinguished Service Medal by Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The prestigious award was created in 1946 in honour of meteorologist and 91�Թ� alum Dr. John Patterson and recognizes outstanding contributions to meteorology in Canada.

Moore is renowned for his climate research in the Arctic and mountainous regions. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts, received over 65 national and international grants and awards and given numerous media interviews on his research and issues related to climate change.

“I’m incredibly honoured,” said Moore, who is praised by peers for his collaborative nature, empathetic leadership and creative approach to research. “To join the ranks of Canada’s leaders in meteorology who have received this award before me — it means a great deal.”

“It’s also a testament to the contributions of the many students, fellows, and colleagues I’ve worked with over the years. It’s been a privilege to collaborate with such generous and committed scientists.”

“Professor Moore’s research program has transformed our understanding of the impacts of climate change in polar and mountainous regions,” said W. Richard Peltier, a University Professor in the department of physics at the Faculty of Arts & Science who nominated Moore for the award. “His highly interdisciplinary and internationally recognized body of knowledge has fostered excellence in climate science, contributing to Canada’s global leadership in the field.”

Moore received his Patterson Medal in a ceremony at the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society Congress this June.

Five faculty members at the 91�Թ� have been recognized with 2023-24 Cheryl Regehr Early Career Teaching Awards.

The annual awards are given to faculty members who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to student learning, pedagogical engagement and teaching innovation.

They are named for Cheryl Regehr, a professor in the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work and a champion of teaching excellence and innovation who served as 91�Թ�’s vice-president and provost for a decade.

Seven students from across the 91�Թ� are recipients of the 2023-2024 Inlight Research Fellowships awarded by Inlight Student Mental Health Research, a 91�Թ� institutional strategic initiative committed to improving student mental health and wellness outcomes.

The $10,000 fellowships support graduate scholars who are leading research projects that aim to improve student mental health and well-being on campus and recognize the importance of student-led and co-designed research solutions.

“The Inlight Research Fellowship Program is dedicated to promoting the development of leaders in post-secondary student mental health research,” said Julius Haag, Inlight’s associate director, education and training and an assistant professor, teaching stream in the department of sociology at 91�Թ� Mississauga.

“We are actively supporting impactful research that will grow the perspectives and capacity needed to advance student mental health and wellness, as well as centring research that focuses on engaging the experiences and perspectives of our diverse student community.”

David Yee, a playwright who teaches at the 91�Թ� Mississauga, has won the prestigious Siminovitch Prize, Canada’s highest valued theatre award.

The lucrative prize is awarded annually to a mid-career professional artist whose groundbreaking work significantly contributes to advancing the art form. It is named after playwright Elinore Siminovitch and University Professor Emeritus Lou Siminovitch.

The Siminovitch laureate receives $75,000 and the opportunity to select an up-and-coming artist to receive a $25,000 protégé prize. Yee, co-founding artistic director of fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company, selected Julie Phan, Toronto writer-performer and arts leader.

“I tell my students that there will come a time in the process of creating a play where you must relinquish control to the play itself – when the play will start to tell you what it wants to be,” Yee said in his acceptance speech. “This is what writing has taught me: how to listen to something greater than myself. Not just as a way to create, but as a way to live in the world.”

Yee, who studied theatre and drama studies at 91�Թ� Mississauga and teaches playwriting at the university, won the Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama in 2015.

In 2021, he produced an audio drama about the infamous Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles, featuring fourth-year students from the Theatre and Drama Studies program offered jointly by 91�Թ� Mississauga and Sheridan College.

Alicia Hawkins, an associate professor in the department of anthropology at 91�Թ� Mississauga and collaborators at the Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation and the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation (OCF) have received a Connaught Community Partnership Research Program award for their project exploring the cataloguing and reclamation of archaeological artifacts.

Historically, archaeology in Ontario has been an extractive practice that failed to include Indigenous communities. From the 1960s to 1980s, teams of archaeologists excavated at the La Cloche site on the north shore of Lake Huron – but the work was unpublished for decades.

More than 40 boxes of artifacts are now in the care of the OCF. However, the lack of publication and comprehensive reporting of the excavations pose challenges for the OCF and Sagamok Anishnawbek, on whose lands the site is located.

To address this, Hawkins and her partners will bring together a multigenerational team of Indigenous Peoples to catalogue and interpret the artifacts. The collaboration will guide the planning and decision-making process for the site and its collections.

The Connaught Community Partnership Research Program aims to help create and nurture partnerships between 91�Թ� scholars and community partners that support community-driven research.

Hawkins is one of four 91�Թ� scholars to receive awards from the program this year. The others are Amaya Perez-Brumer at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, Ishtiaque Ahmed in the Faculty of Arts & Science and Jaris Swidrovich at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy.
