The date of the massacre has become a day of remembrance and action against gender-based violence and discrimination – and each year, the 91³Ô¹Ï community marks the day with an event at Hart House.

Friday’s tri-campus virtual memorial was led by 91³Ô¹Ï’s Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering and the Sexual Violence Prevention & Support Centre, in partnership with Hart House.

“Today we are here to remember the past, the 14 women who died from violence,†said Marisa Sterling, assistant dean and director, diversity, inclusion and professionalism at 91³Ô¹Ï Engineering.

“We are here to acknowledge how far we have come in the present, and we are here to take actions, reimagining a future without violence or aggression towards women within the intersections of many identities.â€

While this year’s event was held online because of the pandemic, previous commemorations have involved ceremonies and events on all three 91³Ô¹Ï campus, including the laying of 14 roses – one for every woman killed. The discussions also emphasized the need to centre the narrative around protecting racialized and 2SLGBTQ+ communities and taking steps to prevent violence against them.

“It’s crazy how [violence is] happening to us, Black women, Indigenous women, the most – and yet less focus is on us,†says Bailey. “People need to wake up and not be desensitized. To centre the narrative, I think we need to create spaces where we have a voice, spaces where we won’t be shamed, ignored and looked over.â€

The group also discussed how non-Black, Indigenous and people of color (Non-BIPOC) 91³Ô¹Ï students, staff and faculty can commit to taking actions, informed by the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

“I encourage folks to actually read the report,†says Duke. “It’s going to take some time. It is 1,200 pages with 231 recommendations, but it’s not that we don’t have a roadmap. May we all find the courage and strength to take action and speak out against violence against women and may we continue to work for change.â€

News home page banner

Off

Fri, 04 Dec 2020 19:53:15 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 167757 at With light and flowers, 91³Ô¹Ï remembers the women killed 30 years ago at École Polytechnique de Montréal /news/light-and-flowers-u-t-remembers-women-killed-30-years-ago-cole-polytechnique-de-montr-al With light and flowers, 91³Ô¹Ï remembers the women killed 30 years ago at École Polytechnique de Montréal

rahul.kalvapalle Fri, 12/06/2019 - 14:52

Cutline

A spotlight shines above King’s College Circle during an event to mark the 30th anniversary of the 14 women killed at École Polytechnique de Montréal (photo by Nick Iwanyshyn)

Rahul Kalvapalle

Topic

Our Community

Faculty of Arts & Science

Faculty of Engineering

Hart House

Meric Gertler

National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

Victoria College

A giant spotlight illuminated the sky above King’s College Circle Friday evening as the 91³Ô¹Ï’s Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering marked the 30th anniversary of the worst act of gender-based violence in Canada’s history with a poignant display of solidarity.

91³Ô¹Ï Engineering was one of 14 engineering schools across the country to participate in the light-shining ceremony.

The event took place around 5 p.m. (EST), which is around the time a gunman entered École Polytechnique de Montréal on Dec. 6, 1989 and killed 14 women before taking his own life. The 14 victims, 12 of whom were engineering students, were targeted because of their gender.

The anniversary of the Dec. 6, 1989 tragedy has since become a day of remembrance and action against gender-based violence and discrimination. The event has reverberated across generations of female and female-identified members of the engineering community in Canada, empowering them to lead, effect change and inspire the next generation of women engineers.

As the 91³Ô¹Ï prepares to mark the day, four members of the 91³Ô¹Ï Engineering community share their reflections on what Dec. 6 means to them.

Mirjana Mijalkovic
Second-year student, Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering

I am fortunate to have grown up surrounded by strong-willed, inspirational women in my family and schooling, who have shown me the tremendous impact of lifelong dedication to their communities and careers.

My mother, Marija Mijalkovic (a 91³Ô¹Ï Engineering alumnae), was the first person to share with me the history of Dec. 6, and since then I’ve held on to the significance of the tragedy as a guiding torch to pursue an engineering education.

Studying engineering at the 91³Ô¹Ï is a true privilege, and for this reason I’ve sought to build roots in the student community by advocating for my peers within the faculty and participating in prospective female student retention initiatives.

Remembering Dec. 6 calls on all of us to reflect on the shortcomings of the past, but also how much has been achieved from the hard work of incredible role models – without whom many of our opportunities and privileges would not exist today.

Julie Audet
Vice-Dean, Graduate Studies, Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering

On Dec. 6, 1989, I was a second-year undergraduate student at Laval University in a life science program.

Some female classmates from my secondary school were attending École Polytechnique at that time and, on that day, my thoughts were with them and their families. I worried for their safety and those around them.

In spite of the significant trauma they experienced, I find comfort in seeing that their careers as engineers flourished. Less than two years after the Montreal massacre, I enrolled in the undergraduate program in chemical engineering at Laval U. Though it has left scars on our psyche, our drive and perseverance to continue our studies and a career in engineering were not diminished by this horrifying event. We could not, and will not, let the actions of others alter our ambitions.

Shivani Nathoo
Alumnae, President, 91³Ô¹Ï Engineering Society, 2018-2019

When I was growing up, I never really saw engineering as a man’s profession, or something that I couldn’t do. When I first heard about the Montreal massacre, I was shocked and scared that there were those who believed the profession should remain a man’s profession and would go to such lengths to protect that.

As I grew up, I found myself recognizing that thought process in more and more people – them trying to make me and others think that women or people who were “different†(those who identify as LGBTQ+, racial minorities and other minority groups) don’t belong in engineering. When you’re getting results that don’t match your expectations – a job rejection, or a bad mark, for example – those words can make an impact.

This has motivated me to seek out mentors and role models, and to talk about my experiences to younger students to reassure them that everyone makes mistakes, that our paths are all different and that they do belong and are contributing to the profession just as much as anyone else.

Savanna Blade

Second-year student, Equity and Inclusivity Director, 91³Ô¹Ï Engineering Society

I learned about the Polytechnique tragedy shortly after the Toronto van attack in 2018. It had a profound impact on me, both as a woman and as a prospective engineering student; it was a sobering reminder that even “isolated†academic communities are not immune to the violent hatred directed towards women and female-presenting individuals in so many other contexts.

Learning of the massacre, and about the still very pervasive biases that women and other underrepresented groups face in engineering, continues to shape the way I see my responsibilities as an engineering student.

Systemic oppression demands systemic change – change that starts here, at Skule, as we grow into the roles that await us in the workforce. Dec. 6 should serve as a reminder that this change starts with accountability; it requires that we recognize the failures of the past so that we can decide how things will be different in the future.

News home page banner

Off

Thu, 05 Dec 2019 13:48:46 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 161137 at National Day of Remembrance & Action commemorated at 91³Ô¹Ï /news/national-day-remembrance-action-commemorated-u-t National Day of Remembrance & Action commemorated at 91³Ô¹Ï

geoff.vendeville Tue, 12/06/2016 - 15:10

Cutline

91³Ô¹Ï staff, students and faculty lay 14 roses in Hart House Circle on the anniversary of the Montreal Massacre.
