It also looks at institutional policies, operational data, alumni impact and national data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and World Bank.</p> <p>To determine environmental impact, the ranking evaluates environmental education, research and sustainability. For social impact, it examines&nbsp;<a href="/news/u-t-among-top-15-universities-globally-graduate-employability-times-higher-education">employability and outcomes</a>, equality, health and well-being, impact of education and knowledge exchange. And for governance, the ranking looks at indicators such as student representation and transparent financial reporting.&nbsp;</p> <p>91³Ō¹Ļ performed particularly well in the social impact category this year, moving up three spots to first globally. It also ranked fifth in the world for environmental impact and tied for 23rd&nbsp;<a href="/news/how-u-t-s-secret-sauce-governance-model-set-it-five-decades-success">in governance</a>.</p> <p>91³Ō¹Ļā€™s performance led a robust showing by Canadian universities. The University of British Columbia shared fifth spot with University College London, making Canada the only country to have two universities in the top five. Two other Canadian universities placed in the top 50: McGill University (15th) and Western University (30th).</p> <p>The QS sustainability ranking comes as 91³Ō¹Ļ forges ahead with a host of climate-focused initiatives on its own campuses including:&nbsp;<a href="/news/u-t-cut-carbon-emissions-half-st-george-campus-2027">Project Leap</a>, a $138-million infrastructure project that will cut emissions on the St. George campus in half by 2027;&nbsp;<a href="https://www.utm.utoronto.ca/green/home/climate-positive/distribute#:~:text=Utilities%20Plant%20Tunnel-,Project%20SHIFT,-Dubbed%20Project%20SHIFT">Project SHIFT</a>, a 91³Ō¹Ļ Mississauga initiative to speed up the transition from natural gas to electricity; and a combination of new climate-responsible constructions and energy retrofits to older buildings at 91³Ō¹Ļ Scarborough.</p> <p>Spurred by these and other efforts, the universityā€™s three campuses last year made <a href="/news/u-t-s-plan-become-climate-positive-expanded-all-three-campuses">a&nbsp;landmark commitment</a>&nbsp;to reduce more greenhouse gases than they emit in the coming years. And 91³Ō¹Ļ continues to make progress on&nbsp;its <a href="/news/u-t-divest-fossil-fuel-investments-create-climate-positive-campus">pledge to divest from fossil fuel investments&nbsp;in its endowment fund</a>.</p> <p>At the same time, 91³Ō¹Ļ is working to enhance Canadaā€™s green energy sector through projects like the&nbsp;<a href="https://cpe.utoronto.ca/grid-modernization-centre/">Grid Modernization Centre</a>, a state-of-the-art facility led by&nbsp;<a href="https://cpe.utoronto.ca/">Climate Positive Energy</a>, an&nbsp;<a href="https://isi.utoronto.ca/">institutional strategic initiative</a>,&nbsp;that will serve as a hub for testing, development and commercialization.</p> <p>91³Ō¹Ļ is also playing a leadership role in sustainability by engaging with regional, national and international partners. For example, the university acted as a founding member of the City of Torontoā€™s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.toronto.ca/services-payments/water-environment/net-zero-homes-buildings/better-buildings-partnership/green-will-initiative/">Green Will Initiative</a>, collaborated with the&nbsp;<a href="https://urbanclimateactionproject.ca/">Urban Climate Action Project</a>&nbsp;to help implement the cityā€™s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.toronto.ca/services-payments/water-environment/environmentally-friendly-city-initiatives/transformto/">TransformTO</a>&nbsp;climate action strategy and contributed to the Toronto Region Board of Tradeā€™s&nbsp;<a href="https://bot.com/Resources/Resource-Library/Banking-on-Green-Playbook"><em>Banking on Green</em></a>&nbsp;playbook, which helps Ontario organizations fund green retrofit projects.</p> <p>Globally, 91³Ō¹Ļ has convened networks aimed at mobilizing multi-sector partnerships, including the U7+ Alliance of World Universities, the University Climate Change Coalition (UC3) and the International Sustainable Campus Network (ISCN). 91³Ō¹Ļā€™s sustainability leaders have also been asked to share knowledge and experiences with other universities in Canada, the U.S., Mexico, Germany and other countries.</p> <p>Most important, 91³Ō¹Ļ is actively creating a new generation of sustainability leaders. Supported by the&nbsp;<a href="https://sustainability.utoronto.ca/ceccs-home/">Presidentā€™s Advisory Committee on the Environment, Climate Change, and Sustainability (CECCS)</a>, which recently created a new&nbsp;<a href="https://sustainability.utoronto.ca/ceccs-subcommittees/student-leadership-subcommittee/">student leadership subcommittee</a>, more than 2,000 undergraduate courses in 2024-25 now&nbsp;have <a href="https://sustainability.utoronto.ca/resources/inventories/sustainability-course-inventory/">a sustainability orientation</a>.&nbsp;</p> <p>Students also have the option of exploring sustainability from various lenses through the&nbsp;<a href="https://sustainability.utoronto.ca/ceccs-subcommittees/teaching-and-learning/sustainability-pathways-program/#:~:text=U%20of%20T%20Sustainability%20Pathways,%2C%20methodological%2C%20and%20practical%20perspectives.">Sustainability Pathways program</a>, or to contribute to projects on- and off-campus via the&nbsp;<a href="https://sustainability.utoronto.ca/ceccs-subcommittees/operations/campus-as-a-living-lab/">Campus as a Living Lab</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://experientiallearning.utoronto.ca/learningtype/community-engaged-learning/">Community-Engaged Learning&nbsp;programs</a>.</p> <p>Overall, 91³Ō¹Ļ continues to be the highest-ranked Canadian university and one of the top-ranked public universities in the five most closely watched international rankings:&nbsp;<em>Times Higher Educationā€™s</em>&nbsp;World University Rankings, QS World University Rankings, ShanghaiRanking Consultancyā€™s Academic Ranking of World Universities,&nbsp;<em>U.S. News &amp; It was designed and commissioned by&nbsp;<a href="http://emerging.fr/" target="_blank">Emerging</a>, a French human resources consultancy. The survey participants are recruiters or managers who supervise five or more new graduates per year; most work in companies with more than 500 employees.&nbsp;</p> <p>There were 13,240 respondents to the survey from 33 countries. More than 129,000 votes were cast, up from 100,700 votes last year. Approximately 1,000 universities were assessed to derive the final ranking of 250 universities.&nbsp;</p> <p>91³Ō¹Ļ has consistently ranked among the top 15 globally in the&nbsp;Times Higher Education&nbsp;employability ranking over the past decade, holding the 12th&nbsp;spot last year.</p> <p>This yearā€™s edition of the ranking was led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the California Institute of Technology and Stanford University. Harvard University and the University of Cambridge rounded out the top five.</p> <p>Four Canadian universities joined 91³Ō¹Ļ in the top 100: McGill University (31st), University of British Columbia (36th), UniversitĆ© de MontrĆ©al (84th) and McMaster University (88th).</p> <p>Overall, 91³Ō¹Ļ continues to be the highest-ranked Canadian university and one of the top-ranked public universities in the five most closely watched international rankings:&nbsp;<em>Times Higher Educationā€™s</em>&nbsp;World University Rankings, QS World University Rankings, ShanghaiRanking Consultancyā€™s Academic Ranking of World Universities,&nbsp;<em>U.S. News &amp; World Reportā€™s</em>&nbsp;Best Global Universities and National Taiwan University World University Rankings.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Wed, 20 Nov 2024 21:57:35 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 310655 at First 48 Hours: Doc about 91³Ō¹Ļ international students now streaming on YouTube /news/first-48-hours-doc-about-u-t-international-students-now-streaming-youtube <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">First 48 Hours: Doc about 91³Ō¹Ļ international students now streaming on YouTube</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>Christopher.Sorensen</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-11-20T08:58:17-05:00" title="Wednesday, November 20, 2024 - 08:58" class="datetime">Wed, 11/20/2024 - 08:58</time> </span> <div class="field field--name-field-youtube field--type-youtube field--label-hidden field__item"><figure class="youtube-container"> <iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/xWDmTAievkk?wmode=opaque" width="450" height="315" id="youtube-field-player" class="youtube-field-player" title="Embedded video for First 48 Hours: Doc about 91³Ō¹Ļ international students now streaming on YouTube" aria-label="Embedded video for First 48 Hours: Doc about 91³Ō¹Ļ international students now streaming on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/embed/xWDmTAievkk?wmode=opaque" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </figure> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Topic</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/topics/global-lens" hreflang="en">Global Lens</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/centre-international-experience" hreflang="en">Centre for International Experience</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/global" hreflang="en">Global</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/student-life" hreflang="en">Student Life</a></div> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>A 22-minute documentary,&nbsp;<em>International Students: First 48 Hours in Canada</em>,&nbsp;directed by&nbsp;<strong>Cal Campos</strong>&nbsp;and shot at the beginning of the 2023-24 school year, is now streaming on YouTube.</p> <p>The film follows international studentsā€™ journeys to the 91³Ō¹Ļ using cell phone footage and sit-down interviews. In keeping with passive house standards, Harmony Commons is well-ventilated and has better air flow than conventional buildings ā€“&nbsp;with the improved air quality intended to help with sleeping and studying.&nbsp;</p> <p>One of the buildingā€™s key innovations is that heat captured from various systems, including exhaust air from kitchens and showers, is used to heat spaces throughout the structure.&nbsp;</p> <p>In fact, the building is so efficient that the energy it uses to make more than 3,000 meals each day in its dorms and dining hall is less than that used by two average households.</p> <p>Designed by Handel Architects, Harmony Commons is also fully electric. Since no fossil fuels are burned in heating and cooling the building, it has extremely low carbon emissions.&nbsp;</p> <figure role="group" class="caption caption-drupal-media align-right"> <div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/2024-09/Harmony--Commons-%2825%29-crop.jpg" width="300" height="300" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> </div> <figcaption>Harmony Commons has an airtight and well-insulated envelope that prevents heat from escaping. It proves that passive house is an attainable standard for future large-scale developments,ā€ he says.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>He adds it also allowed many local people working in the trades to be trained in new construction methods for high-performance, sustainable buildings.&nbsp;</p> <p>ā€œThis was a great opportunity to realize that you can contribute to reducing global climate change impact and still live a great quality of life,ā€ he says.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Wed, 25 Sep 2024 16:57:52 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 309508 at 91³Ō¹Ļ ranked fourth in the world in research-focused NTU World University RankingsĀ  /news/u-t-ranked-fourth-world-research-focused-ntu-world-university-rankings <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">91³Ō¹Ļ ranked fourth in the world in research-focused NTU World University Rankings&nbsp;</span> <div class="field field--name-field-featured-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="eager" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-09/UofT94068_Visualization-Facility_Kundur-Class_March-2023_9_Volpe-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=ZIojF8mM 370w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_740/public/2024-09/UofT94068_Visualization-Facility_Kundur-Class_March-2023_9_Volpe-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=Jg7jfhUh 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_1110/public/2024-09/UofT94068_Visualization-Facility_Kundur-Class_March-2023_9_Volpe-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=Z-VSk2dE 1110w" sizes="(min-width:1200px) 1110px, (max-width: 1199px) 80vw, (max-width: 767px) 90vw, (max-width: 575px) 95vw" width="740" height="494" src="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-09/UofT94068_Visualization-Facility_Kundur-Class_March-2023_9_Volpe-crop.jpg?h=81d682ee&amp;itok=ZIojF8mM" alt="A woman gestures to diagram on a visualization screen."> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>Christopher.Sorensen</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-09-06T11:51:19-04:00" title="Friday, September 6, 2024 - 11:51" class="datetime">Fri, 09/06/2024 - 11:51</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Cutline</div> <div class="field__item"><p><em>(photo by Matt Volpe)</em></p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-reporters field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/authors-reporters/mariam-matti" hreflang="en">Mariam Matti</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Topic</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/topics/global-lens" hreflang="en">Global Lens</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/leah-cowen" hreflang="en">Leah Cowen</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/global" hreflang="en">Global</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/national-taiwan-university" hreflang="en">National Taiwan University</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/rankings" hreflang="en">Rankings</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/research-innovation" hreflang="en">Research &amp; Innovation</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-subheadline field--type-string-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Subheadline</div> <div class="field__item">The National Taiwan University ranking evaluates universities based on research output and impact</div> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>The 91³Ō¹Ļ climbed one spot to fourth place globally in the latest National Taiwan University ranking, which evaluates universities based on their research output and impact.</p> <p>91³Ō¹Ļā€™s strong performance in the 2024 edition of the&nbsp;<a href="http://nturanking.csti.tw/ranking/OverallRanking/">NTU World University Rankings</a>, released this week, puts it in elite global company. text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p><strong>Emma Brijlall Nakahara</strong>, who is set to begin studies at the 91³Ō¹Ļ this fall, earned&nbsp;one of the highest marks across all of Torontoā€™s public high schools this year.</p> <p>Nakahara graduated from the Toronto District School Boardā€™s (TDSB) <a href="https://schoolweb.tdsb.on.ca/vss" target="_blank">Virtual Secondary School </a>with an average of 99.7 per cent, making her <a href="https://www.tdsb.on.ca/home/ctl/Details/mid/43823/itemid/334" target="_blank">one of three graduates</a> recognized for earning top grades.&nbsp;</p> <p>She says she chose the online school in part due to challenges she experiences with low blood sugar that require her to eat frequently to stay focused ā€“ a condition that can be difficult to manage in a classroom.</p> <p>She is a big proponent of advocating for oneself when it comes to accessibility needs.&nbsp;</p> <p>ā€œEven if it feels a bit weird sometimes, even if your needs are unconventional and people may not understand them, you still have to respect them and you deserve to get the accommodations that you need,ā€ she says.&nbsp;</p> <p>When she starts at 91³Ō¹Ļ Scarborough this fall, itā€™ll be the first time Nakahara has attended in-person classes since she was a child.</p> <p>Yet, despite never meeting her high school peers and teachers in person, she says she still felt connected to the school community thanks to being involved in extracurricular activities, including the schoolā€™s newsletter and yearbook, and tutoring other students.&nbsp;</p> <figure role="group" class="caption caption-drupal-media align-center"> <div> <div class="field school, she practices judo, enjoys writing poetry and crocheting, and has nurtured a lifelong love of the environment and conservation by volunteering with the <a href="https://highparknaturecentre.com" target="_blank">High Park Nature Centre</a>.&nbsp;She also volunteered at the Cedarbrae Branch of the Toronto Public Library in Scarborough, noting that reading is one of her biggest de-stressors ā€“&nbsp;particularly the fantasy genre.&nbsp;</p> <p>ā€œYou have to be more purposeful when youā€™re in virtual school ā€“&nbsp;about getting out there, communicating with your teachers, staying focused,ā€ she says. ā€œI like to get out and do stuff, so I donā€™t really think being online impacted my experience.ā€</p> <p>At 91³Ō¹Ļ Scarborough,&nbsp;she will be part of a co-op program and pursuing a double major in&nbsp;conservation and biodiversity&nbsp;and&nbsp;public policy, as well as a minor in&nbsp;creative writing.&nbsp;</p> <p>She says she chose 91³Ō¹Ļ Scarborough for several reasons: the option to take three programs and co-op, the convenience of being near her Scarborough home and the <a href="https://www.utsc.utoronto.ca/indigenous-place-making/ma-moosh-ka-win-valley-trail">Ma Moosh Ka Win Valley Trail</a>, which has received awards for its accessibility features and is frequented by Nakaharaā€™s family.&nbsp;</p> <p>Nakahara says sheā€™s looking forward to the extra freedom that comes with being a university student ā€“&nbsp;including the chance to explore whatever interests her academically.&nbsp;</p> <p>ā€œIn elementary school, I was maybe a little bored and that made it hard to do my schoolwork,ā€ says Nakahara, who earned her best high school marks in courses such as environmental resource management, calculus and vectors, physics and chemistry. ā€œI think I got higher marks in high school because I was interested in what I was doing.ā€</p> <figure role="group" maintain her high marks through Grade 12,&nbsp;she says she placed the stress upon herself and knows doing so can be unhealthy.</p> <p>ā€œThat wasnā€™t necessarily something I should have been doing,ā€ she says. ā€œI think sometimes people feel bad when they get low marks, and I felt bad when I lost marks. But school isnā€™t the only place where it matters to succeed. People can succeed in all areas of their life.ā€&nbsp;</p> <p>When asked for her best study tips at a ceremony honouring the TDSBā€™s top scholars, she told the audience of news outlets, teachers and family that everyone is different so thereā€™s no one-size-fits-all approach to excelling in school. In her case, she says she prioritized eating and broke her school day up by exercising ā€“ a habit sheā€™s planning on keeping this fall on campus at the <a href="https://www.tpasc.ca">Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre</a>.&nbsp;</p> <p>ā€œThat really helped me stay energized for my schoolwork and made it so it didnā€™t feel like some endless task I had to do,ā€ she says. ā€œTaking breaks was important.ā€</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-add-new-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Add new story tags</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/back-school-2024" hreflang="en">Back to School 2024</a></div> </div> </div> Thu, 15 Aug 2024 14:51:17 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 309020 at
