It also looks at institutional policies, operational data, alumni impact and national data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and World Bank.

To determine environmental impact, the ranking evaluates environmental education, research and sustainability. For social impact, it examines employability and outcomes, equality, health and well-being, impact of education and knowledge exchange. And for governance, the ranking looks at indicators such as student representation and transparent financial reporting.

91³Ō¹Ļ performed particularly well in the social impact category this year, moving up three spots to first globally. It also ranked fifth in the world for environmental impact and tied for 23rd in governance.

91³Ō¹Ļā€™s performance led a robust showing by Canadian universities. The University of British Columbia shared fifth spot with University College London, making Canada the only country to have two universities in the top five. Two other Canadian universities placed in the top 50: McGill University (15th) and Western University (30th).

The QS sustainability ranking comes as 91³Ō¹Ļ forges ahead with a host of climate-focused initiatives on its own campuses including: Project Leap, a $138-million infrastructure project that will cut emissions on the St. George campus in half by 2027; Project SHIFT, a 91³Ō¹Ļ Mississauga initiative to speed up the transition from natural gas to electricity; and a combination of new climate-responsible constructions and energy retrofits to older buildings at 91³Ō¹Ļ Scarborough.

Spurred by these and other efforts, the universityā€™s three campuses last year made a landmark commitment to reduce more greenhouse gases than they emit in the coming years. And 91³Ō¹Ļ continues to make progress on its pledge to divest from fossil fuel investments in its endowment fund.

At the same time, 91³Ō¹Ļ is working to enhance Canadaā€™s green energy sector through projects like the Grid Modernization Centre, a state-of-the-art facility led by Climate Positive Energy, an institutional strategic initiative, that will serve as a hub for testing, development and commercialization.

91³Ō¹Ļ is also playing a leadership role in sustainability by engaging with regional, national and international partners. For example, the university acted as a founding member of the City of Torontoā€™s Green Will Initiative, collaborated with the Urban Climate Action Project to help implement the cityā€™s TransformTO climate action strategy and contributed to the Toronto Region Board of Tradeā€™s Banking on Green playbook, which helps Ontario organizations fund green retrofit projects.

Globally, 91³Ō¹Ļ has convened networks aimed at mobilizing multi-sector partnerships, including the U7+ Alliance of World Universities, the University Climate Change Coalition (UC3) and the International Sustainable Campus Network (ISCN). 91³Ō¹Ļā€™s sustainability leaders have also been asked to share knowledge and experiences with other universities in Canada, the U.S., Mexico, Germany and other countries.

Most important, 91³Ō¹Ļ is actively creating a new generation of sustainability leaders. Supported by the Presidentā€™s Advisory Committee on the Environment, Climate Change, and Sustainability (CECCS), which recently created a new student leadership subcommittee, more than 2,000 undergraduate courses in 2024-25 now have a sustainability orientation.

Students also have the option of exploring sustainability from various lenses through the Sustainability Pathways program, or to contribute to projects on- and off-campus via the Campus as a Living Lab and Community-Engaged Learning programs.

Overall, 91³Ō¹Ļ continues to be the highest-ranked Canadian university and one of the top-ranked public universities in the five most closely watched international rankings: Times Higher Educationā€™s World University Rankings, QS World University Rankings, ShanghaiRanking Consultancyā€™s Academic Ranking of World Universities, U.S. News & Classes will be held in the teaching lodge ā€“ which has a wood stove ā€“ whenever possible, moving to the Multimedia Studio Theatre only when advanced digital technology is needed.

Leading a course in an Indigenous space marks the latest chapter in a longstanding connection between Hupfield, an off-reservation urban Anishinaabe who belongs to the Wasauksing First Nation, and 91³Ō¹Ļ Mississauga.

An alumna of the university, Hupfield earned a degree in art and art history with a minor in Aboriginal studies ā€“ somewhat unusual in the late 1990s. ā€œI became very interested in working at the intersection of Anishinaabe cultural knowledge and Western-based art practices,ā€ she says. ā€œThe program made room for me to do that.ā€

As a student, Hupfield mounted her own exhibits and launched partnerships with Indigenous arts and social services organizations. After graduating, she went on to establish herself as an internationally respected artist, holding exhibitions at prominent galleries across North America and winning prestigious awards.

In 2019, she returned to 91³Ō¹Ļ Mississauga as a faculty member, and amid increased institutional support for Indigenous initiatives, has thrived and expanded the scope of her projects.

As director and lead artist at the new Indigenous Creation Studio, Hupfield leads a team of faculty members and students exploring media ranging from traditional sculpture to video. Her current research, conducted in collaboration with Indigenous communities, aims to bring new life to Indigenous artefacts via the creation of a digital archive that presents each piece in novel ways, such as through storytelling, video and 3D rendering.

She also leads a seminar series for students in the master of visual studies program at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design.

Hupfield also continues to work on an array of projects beyond campus. Earlier this year, she contributed to the first ever Native Fashion Week held in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She is also currently presenting an original commission at the Toronto Biennial of Art, an opportunity she describes as ā€œa really powerful moment in my art practice.ā€

The teaching lodge is equipped with a wood stove and can be used year-round (photo by Nick Iwanyshyn)

As she looks forward to the "Indigenous Feminisms" course, Hupfield reiterates that Indigenous pedagogy is about doing and experiencing. ā€œI find that itā€™s not until students are outside on the land and in Indigenous spaces that they really understand the teachings,ā€ she says.

Tee Duke, director of 91³Ō¹Ļ Mississaugaā€™s Office of Indigenous Initiatives, notes that expansion of Indigenous curriculum and spaces ā€“ along with hiring of Indigenous faculty ā€“ were among the calls to action outlined in Answering the Call ā€“ Wecheehetowin, the final report of the 91³Ō¹Ļ Truth and Reconciliation Commission Steering Committee. ā€œItā€™s an important development to have a course on Indigenous Feminisms taught in UTMā€™s own teaching lodge," Duke said.

The course also ties into 91³Ō¹Ļ Mississaugaā€™s strategic framework, specifically the central values of truth, openness and reciprocity, according to Terry F. href="https://sustainability.utoronto.ca/operations/climate-positive-tri-campus-commitment/">adopted by all three campuses ā€“ to become climate-positive by 2050, is one of several initiatives that Allue will spread the word about at the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference, beginning Nov. 11 and ending Nov. 22.

Sheā€™s also going to showcase 91³Ō¹Ļ Mississaugaā€™s local strategies to address climate change, in addition to its array of educational and research programs on environmental issues ā€“ efforts that have contributed to 91³Ō¹Ļ being named the most sustainable university in the world in the 2024 QS World University Rankings.

ā€œWhatā€™s happening at UTM is truly inspiring, and itā€™s an honour to spread awareness about it in the global community,ā€ says Allue, who also looks forward to sharing her learnings from the conference with the 91³Ō¹Ļ Mississauga community when she returns.

For Allue, attending the pre-eminent global gathering on climate change is a culmination of her efforts to engage with and raise awareness about climate issues.

When she was only 15 years old, she started a recycling and wastewater project in her hometown of Soria in northern Spain. ā€œI wanted to educate my peers about what they could do, because climate action is often perceived as something that belongs to powerful stakeholders,ā€ she says.

Allue has also been involved with several international organizations that encourage youth to participate in politics and civil society, with a strong focus on environmental issues: sheā€™s currently a European Union (EU) Young European Ambassador and a member of the European Youth Energy Network, which she will also represent at COP29.

<div class="field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden Student Association for Geography, Geomatics and the Environment (SAGE).

She says the support she has received from 91³Ō¹Ļ Mississaugaā€™s Sustainability Office in attending COP29 is proof of the universityā€™s steadfast belief in studentsā€™ potential to effect change.

ā€œWhat I'm really looking forward to is bringing to COP29 the sense of belonging and pride that I feel in UTMā€™s climate action,ā€ says Allue.

ā€œWhen I first started contributing to the environmental field, I felt like my voice was barely heard. class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item">
As she prepares to graduate from the 91³Ō¹Ļ Mississauga, Nirmol Midha is taking time to reflect on the meaningful lessons, rich experiences and diverse connections that punctuated her journey ā€“ including a passion for supporting mental health.

ā€œItā€™s a really emotional time, because at UTM I developed so much, not only academically but as a person,ā€ says Midha, an international student from India who completed an undergraduate degree in psychology.

ā€œIt was a time of self-exploration, growth and discovering my resilience.ā€

Midha specifically chose to study at the 91³Ō¹Ļ Mississauga campus because of its serene natural surroundings and the option to have two minors ā€“ in biology and political science.

She says majoring in psychology was a way for her to better understand human motivations and behaviours ā€“ and to learn how to support mental health.

ā€œI felt a deep calling to understand people on a deeper level and support their emotional and mental well-being,ā€ she says.

ā€œI think thatā€™s really important in todayā€™s world.ā€

Midha says she was fascinated to learn about the how the mind develops, the structure and function of the brain, the evolution of cognition in children and how to conduct quantitative research.

She says her professors skillfully brought the topics to life.

ā€œAll of the professors at UTM taught really well. They made the concepts so engaging,ā€ she says. ā€œThey were helpful, accommodating and always trying to offer a helping hand.ā€

Midha complemented her classroom learning with mental health-related extracurricular activities.

She served a term as the vice-president of the student club Mending Minds, for which she organized mental health awareness events. She also worked as the education and communication lead at The Wellness Den, a space connected with the Health & Counselling Centre that provides wellness services to support students. There, she created an escape room game to bring awareness to the Denā€™s offerings.

ā€œThe goal at the Den was to let students know that we all deal with academic and life pressures ā€“ and sometimes itā€™s a lot, but everythingā€™s going to be fine,ā€ she says.

Like other Class of 2024 grads, Midhaā€™s education was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic that forced 91³Ō¹Ļ to hold many classes virtually for an extended period. Missing out on so much campus life was difficult, she says, but notes she was able to find her stride with online learning and maintain her circle of friends.

She says remote learning also allowed her to attend her nephew, who was unwell.

ā€œEverythingā€™s going to have its positives and negatives,ā€ she says. ā€œYou just have to look at the positive side and move on with it.ā€

While Midha is considering future studies in social work and speech-language pathology, she is currently focused on research, administration and mental health roles.

What she knows for sure is that she wants to apply what she has learned about human psychology and wellness so she can help others. That includes through her volunteer role as vice-president of marketing for UTM Campus Connections, a club that supports community members with intellectual disabilities.

ā€œI want to use what Iā€™ve learned at UTM to make a meaningful impact in peopleā€™s lives,ā€ she says. ā€œI hope to contribute to something bigger than myself in the future.ā€

News home page banner

Off

Fri, 01 Nov 2024 19:59:56 +0000 lanthierj 310170 at Congratulations Class of 2024! 91³Ō¹Ļ prepares to celebrate graduates at fall convocation /news/congratulations-class-2024-u-t-prepares-celebrate-graduates-fall-convocation Congratulations Class of 2024! 91³Ō¹Ļ prepares to celebrate graduates at fall convocation Christopher.Sorensen Wed, 10/23/2024 - 12:02

Mariam Matti

Topic

Our Community

Convocation 2024

Eagle Feather Bearer

Wesley Hall

Convocation Hall

Meric Gertler

St. George

91³Ō¹Ļ Mississauga

91³Ō¹Ļ Scarborough

Subheadline

More than 4,000 students are expected to attend ceremonies in Convocation Hall between Oct. 28 and Nov. 1 - while more than 5,000 students are expected to graduate in total

The autumn air at the 91³Ō¹Ļ is filled with excitement as students prepare to don hoods and gowns to cross the stage at Convocation Hall, marking the end of an academic journey and beginning of a new chapter.

Between Oct. 28 and Nov. 1, more than 5,700 students will graduate from 91³Ō¹Ļ, with more than 4,000 of them expected to cross the stage at Convocation Hall during 10 scheduled ceremonies.

Students graduating this fall represent 77 countries, including Canada, and range in age from 18 to 77. By the conclusion of the final ceremony, more than 21,500 students from across 91³Ō¹Ļā€™s three campuses will have graduated this year ā€“ and most of them began their studies just as the COVID-19 pandemic was taking hold.

ā€œOn behalf of the 91³Ō¹Ļ, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the members of the Class of 2024,ā€ said 91³Ō¹Ļ President Meric Gertler. ā€œYou have persevered in the face of an extraordinary challenge ā€“ and the strength, creativity and determination you have shown in your pursuit of excellence have inspired all of us.ā€

Throughout this week, staff and faculty will be putting the final touches on preparations, checking the printed parchments and placing them into envelopes, and readying Convocation Hall for the arrival of graduating students and their guests ā€“ up to two family members or friends per student. Viewers in mainland China can watch the broadcasts on MyMedia a day or two after the original ceremony date.

The ceremonies will feature numerous traditions, some dating back more than a century. They include colourful hoods and flowing gowns, a bedel carrying 91³Ō¹Ļā€™s gold-plated mace, a 51-bell carillon ringing out from atop Soldiersā€™ Tower, and the chancellorā€™s procession.

The procession will be led by an Eagle Feather Bearer carrying a ceremonial Eagle Feather ā€“ a tradition that symbolizes the universityā€™s deep respect for Indigenous Peoples and cultural traditions and was first introduced to 91³Ō¹Ļā€™s convocation ceremonies in spring 2022.

The beaded stole worn by the Eagle Feather Bearer, which symbolizes the enduring partnership between the university and Indigenous Peoples, made its inaugural appearance in convocation ceremonies this past spring.

Throughout the week, the Myhal Centre for Engineering Innovation and Entrepreneurship will serve as the main hub for students before the ceremonies, with graduands collecting their gown and hood from the lobby of the building.
