The university was founded by charter in 1827 as King's College, the first institution of higher learning in the colony of Upper Canada. Initially controlled by the Church of England, it took on the present name in 1850 upon becoming a secular institution.
Today 190 years later, 91³Ô¹Ï has 12 distinct colleges, two satellite locations in Scarborough and Mississauga, more than 86,700 students and 14,000 faculty members, and it is considered a global leader in research and teaching. Recent surveys have shown 91³Ô¹Ï ranks among the top 10 in the world for student employability and ranked top 10 internationally by QS World University Rankings in six subjects.
