Tyee Fellows and Andrea Johns win President’s Award for Outstanding Indigenous Student of the Year

Andrea Johns and Tyee Fellows are the winners of the President’s Award for the Outstanding Indigenous Student of the Year.

The awards, which recognize Indigenous students whose accomplishments transcend coursework and grades, and who demonstrate a commitment to giving back to their communities, were presented to Johns and Fellows by 91Թ President Meric Gertler during a ceremony at First Nations House.

A fourth-year undergraduate student specializing in Indigenous studies with a double minor in book and media studies and creative expression and society, Johns was recognized for her tireless advocacy for Indigenous language revitalization. Fellows, a medical student, was honoured for his passion for helping others, and for being on track to become one of Canada’s few Inuit physicians.

“Both of you have skilfully balanced academic success with community engagement, service and advocacy on Indigenous issues,” said President Gertler.
